Inside the uni halls-style prison where Lucy Letby will spend the rest of her life: Killer nurse with 14 life sentences will see out days in HMP Low Newton where inmates go shopping for snacks and clothes, sleep in pink cells and pet animals

Serial child killer Lucy Letby will spend life behind bars with the country’s most depraved killers in a prison where inmates will have the chance to go shopping, pet baby animals and decorate their cells in pink.

The 33-year-old, who will initially be held in solitary confinement to avoid being attacked by fellow prisoners, will sit at HMP Low Newton in Durham next to Joanna Dennehy, who killed three men during a 10-day attack in 2013.

Bot Letby and Dennehy were sentenced to life in prison. The only other women to have received such punishment are Moors killer Myra Hindley – who died in 2002 – and Rose West.

Previous prisoners at Low Newton have included Cromwell Street killer Rose West, Baby P’s mother Tracey Connelly and Britain’s youngest female killer, Sharon Carr, who randomly selected and killed her victim when she was 12.

In the highest security prison, killer wives get the chance to pet sheep and goats and take care of a rabbit and birds to keep them ‘calm’. The scheme was revealed last year in a report by the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB), a group that ensures that prisoners are treated humanely behind bars.

HMP Low Newton is next to HMP Frankland’s so-called Monster Mansion, where the Soham killers Ian Huntley, Wayne Couzens and Levi Bellfield are held.

If and when she is placed in the main prison population, Letby will likely have access to the Rags to Riches store that sells clothes to inmates.

The general population wing also contains cells in which some degree of room personalization is allowed.

Letby was originally held at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey but was subsequently moved to HMP New Hall in Wakefield for trial.

Following her sentencing, she will be transferred today to Low Newton, located in the village of Brasside near Durham.

Rose West was transferred to Low Newton from HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Middlesex – where Letby had served her time on remand – after it was found that prisoners conspired to hit her with billiard balls. West is now at HM New Hall, Flockton, Yorkshire, having been convicted of ten counts of murder in 1995.

The most notorious prisoner currently at Low Newton Dennehy, along with Kilburn killer Emma Aitken.

Aitken was sentenced to life for the murder of Barry Smith, whose beaten and burned body was discovered in 2013 outside the Kilburn Welfare Social Club in Derbyshire. Her father Vincent Aitken and friend Nathan Dohert also received life sentences.

As a multiple child murderer, Letby will be viewed with extreme hostility by most behind bars and likely initially placed in the prison’s segregation unit.

The area can accommodate up to three women and lacks some amenities.

If the scheme is still running, Letby will also be allowed to pet sheep and goats as therapy for prisoners. In addition to those animals, the prison also has a resident rabbit and two birds that are cared for by inmates.

The scheme was revealed in a new report from the Independent Monitoring Boards, which ensures that prisoners are treated humanely.

The IMB noted that petting the animals had a “calming effect” on even the most “challenging” inmates.

Low Newton – a maximum security prison and Young Offender Institution – is regarded as a leader in changing the behavior of dangerous female offenders.

It is home to the ‘Primrose Project’, designed to treat women with ‘dangerous and severe personality disorders’ – the only women’s prison in the UK with such a unit.

It is believed to be the only maximum-security prison in the country to operate a “child deception” program, although some lower-tier prisons do.

During the period of the IMB report – March 2021 to February last year – the prison had 10 pregnant inmates and introduced “memory boxes” for inmates to help them deal with the stress of separating from their child.

Letby will be the subject of psychological examinations and reports, and will become the “patient” of several aspiring therapists and healers whether she wants to be or not.

Prison inspection reports said: ‘The cells were not well equipped with just a bed, toilet and sink.

“The regimen was limited to just an hour a day outdoors and half an hour for daily tasks, such as showering.”

The Department of Justice and Prisons declined to comment to MailOnline on where Letby would serve her sentence, adding that they are not providing information on individual cases.

Letby remains at risk of suicide, and the staff would be severely – and very publicly – criticized if such a prominent inmate committed suicide.

However, a suicide watch cannot be continued indefinitely – certainly not for years or decades, because it puts too much strain on the staff.

It is a matter of judgment when a watch is lifted, and it is not an exact science.
