Manchester United will reportedly provide an update on Mason Greenwood’s future at the football club on Monday.

David Ornstein of The Athletic said in an interview with NBC sports: ‘We expect an update from Manchester United tomorrow.’

He also added that “no final decision has yet been made” on Greenwood’s future and that “all scenarios remain open.”

It comes after the Athletic revealed that Richard Arnold, the club’s general manager, who has the final decision on the 21-year-old’s future at the club, reportedly told senior staff two weeks ago that the club was planning to bring Greenwood back.

Ornstein said: “Manchester United’s official line is that no final decision has been made yet and all scenarios remain open to them.

And they plan for them, like reintegrating Mason Greenwood. Keep it and loan it out. Sell him or work with their lawyers to actually fire him.”

But the club has faced backlash following those reports, with the Sun claiming United were ‘considering a turnaround’ over plans to reintegrate him after receiving criticism.

It comes as countdown host Rachel Riley announced this week that she would stop supporting the Red Devils if the club brought the 21-year-old back.

Ornstein said of the pending decision: “The Athletic revealed last week that Richard Arnold spoke to his executive leadership group early this month.

“He told them they intend to bring Greenwood back into the fold and that is a decision believed to be supported by Erik ten Hag and John Murtough on the football side of the club.”

Greenwood has been suspended by the club for a year and a half after his arrest in 2022.

The prosecution announced in February this year that the charges against him had been dropped.

United also announced in February that they would conduct their own investigation “before determining next steps.”

On Wednesday, United issued a statement saying that a decision had not yet been made.

The statement read: “After all charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023, Manchester United have launched a thorough investigation into the allegations against him.

“This is based on extensive evidence and context that is not in the public domain, and we have heard from countless people with direct involvement or knowledge of the matter.

“Throughout this process, the well-being and perspective of the alleged victim has been central to the club’s investigations, and we respect her right to lifelong anonymity.

“We also have responsibilities to Mason as an employee, as a youngster who has been with the club since he was seven, and as a brand new father with a partner.

“The research phase of our investigation is now complete and we are in the final stages of making a decision about Mason’s future.

“Contrary to media speculation, that decision has not yet been made and is currently being intensively considered internally. The ultimate responsibility rests with the Chief Executive Officer.

Once made, the decision will be communicated and explained to the club’s internal and external stakeholders.

“This has been a difficult case for anyone associated with Manchester United, and we understand the strong opinions it has provoked based on the partial evidence in the public domain.” We ask for patience as we go through the final stages of this carefully considered process.”
