Jordan Pickford was the subject of controversy during Everton’s game against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
The Toffees got off to a dismal start at Villa Park, with John McGinn opening the scoring on 18 minutes by tapping in a well-worked cross from Leon Bailey after Villa opened Everton’s defence.
Unai Emery’s looked very dangerous in the early changes and in the 24th minute, with Ollie Watkins running for a dangerous through ball in the box.
Pickford rushed out to meet him and as he attempted to clear the ball away from the Villa forward, the Everton goalkeeper finally appeared to collide with the England striker.
It was similar to an incident during the opening round of Premier League matches last week, when Andre Onana slammed Sasa Kalajdzic during Man United’s 1-0 win against Wolves.
That decision sparked much controversy after a VAR review opted to uphold Simon Hooper’s decision not to award a penalty to the United goalkeeper despite the brutal collision.
Gary O’Neil, who was booked for venting his anger at the touchline decision during that game, was eventually given an apology by refereeing boss Jon Moss after Wolves were denied a clear penalty late in the game.
Mail Sport also reported after the match that refereeing chief Howard Webb had contacted Wolves to admit they should have been awarded a penalty for the former Inter Milan goalkeeper’s foul.
After the game, O’Neil said, “I don’t think the officials are trying to favor one side. I just think it’s human nature. If there’s a decision you’re unsure about, everyone would be influenced by the Old Trafford crowd and the fact that it’s Manchester United.
It looked like the keeper almost knocked our centre-forward’s head off. If you go for the ball and the player rattles so hard, it’s a penalty.’
After the game, United’s shot-stopper claimed VAR was right not to award the penalty as his manager backed him for the outlandish challenge.
But fans have hit the consistency of referees in the Premier League today, with some claiming that ‘the inconsistency in this league is insane…
Onana did the same against Wolves last week and that was not given, but Pickford’s is now. Just be consistent.’
After a VAR review, Anthony Taylor awarded a penalty against Everton, after which Douglas Luiz converted from the spot to put the home side ahead 2-0.
It comes as Opta claims this is the fifth penalty Pickford has conceded in the Premier League since joining Everton in 2017.
