House fire breaks out at Hawthorne: Neighbours desperately battle blaze to save locals as flames rip through several properties in Brisbane

Dramatic footage captured the moment neighbors gathered to rescue locals from their homes after a ‘ferocious’ house fire engulfed three properties.

At least two men rushed to help an injured and disoriented man after hearing screams and exploding windows at a house on Forbes Street in Hawthorne, Brisbane, at 8:20 p.m. Saturday.

They found him in the front yard, before another resident was pulled from a burning home with severe burns.

Another resident attempted to smash the windshield on the second floor of a home as a fire burned inside.

Three men were taken to hospital, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

A man in his 40s was treated at the scene for “severe burns to his back, head, chest, arms and legs.”

He was then rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in serious condition.

Two other men, both in their 30s, were taken to the same hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Paramedics responded to a call about the blaze at 8:16 p.m., which quickly set homes on both sides ablaze.

Two houses were destroyed and a third was badly damaged.

Residents of a neighboring house reported this Courier Mail that their husbands “grabbed” the man after hearing for help.

“We heard windows explode and two men screaming for help,” said a woman who asked to remain anonymous.

“I saw how they pulled the old man out of the house.”

Residents of all three buildings were evacuated.

The fire was so intense that some locals feared that the Powerhouse arts center in Brisbane, 700 meters across the Brisbane River, was on fire.

Lauren Crampton, driving home after watching the football, described the scene as “awful.”

She first thought the ‘ferocious’ fire was a bonfire, but she called 000 when she realized it was a ‘multiple house fire’.

“All I could see was several people smashing windows to make sure no one was inside.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said crews had the house fires under control by 9:20 pm.

But even then it created “a large amount of smoke in the area and surrounding suburbs.”

It warned all local residents to close their windows and doors and anyone with respiratory illnesses to “keep their medicines close at hand.”

The police and QFES were investigating the cause of the fire on Sunday.
