Echo arrives on Disney Plus Wednesday Nov 29. Marvel has also revealed that Echo is getting a Netflix-style launchwith the series of entries falling on launch day.
It’s unclear why Echo is released in full. Episodes of every other Marvel TV show have aired weekly, so this marks a major departure from the usual Marvel and Disney streaming release strategy.
Industry insiders have been busy speculating as to why this is the case. According to numerous speakers, including ViewerAnon And CanWeGetSomeToast (CWGST), Echo’s development has been rougher than Secret invasionthe most recent MCU TV show that was trashed by fans and critics alike. According to CWGST, Echo has undergone reshoots to support the episodic flow. According to MCU insider Charles MurphyEcho will also only consist of five episodes.
Given the confusion over the development cycle, it’s not surprising to see reports that Marvel could even slow down Echo‘s release. In early August, those rumors also seemed to be credible EchoDisney’s launch date was omitted from Disney’s late 2023 TV show lineup. However, Marvel insider Alex P suggests that it will not be delayed until 2024, citing that Loki season 2The October 6 release date was also not on Disney’s list. LokiThe next outing hasn’t been postponed either, so you can expect that Echo to debut later this year.
Echo cast
Major spoilers follow The end of Hawkeye.
Here is Echo‘s confirmed cast so far:
- Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo
- Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez
- Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin
- Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil
- Devery Jacobs as Julie
- Chaske Spencer as TBA
- Tantoo Cardinal as TBA
- Cody Lightning as TBA
- Graham Greene as TBA
After her debut in Hawkeye, Cox’s Lopez/Echo returns to host her own show. She is joined by McClarnon, who played Echo’s father William Lopez Hawkeye. However, McClarnon’s performance will be limited to flashback sequences. In Hawkeyeit was revealed that the former hub of the tracksuit mafia was dead, with William believed to have been killed by Clint Barton/Hawkeye (then disguised as anti-hero Ronin) during the Blip, i.e. the time period between Avengers: Infinite War And Avengers: endgame.
Following his own MCU entrance Hawkeye, D’Onofrio’s Fisk will also return. Fisk adopted Maya after her father’s death and trained the deaf superhero to become an expert combatant for his sprawling crime syndicate. However, when it was revealed that Fisk had ordered the fatal hit on William Lopez, Echo sought revenge on her adopter by shooting him in the face during Hawkeye‘s last episode. Fisk’s fate was unknown after that confrontation, but now we know he survived. He will wear an eye patch as a result of Echo’s attack.
Cox’s Murdock/Daredevil, who appeared in MCU projects Spider-Man: No Way Home And She Hulk, will contribute to his supporting roles here. According to industry leaker Daniel RPK (as reported by Tavern Marvel), Daredevil only appears in two episodes. Will we see Daredevil and Fisk throw down like they did Netflix‘s Daredevil series? Here’s hoping. If they don’t, we’ll have to wait for them to cross paths Daredevil: Born Againwhich is expected to arrive in 2024.
As for other supporting players, we don’t know most of their identities yet. Marvel confirmed the hiring of other actors in May 2022, but the studio has not revealed who they play. deadline has since claimed Devery Jacobs (Reserve Dogs) plays someone named Julie, who is described as “strong-willed and resilient”.
Echo plot
Here is Echo‘s official story synopsis, which was released alongside the show’s cast announcements: “The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown (Oklahoma). She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”
Not much going on, but it sounds like Echo can be a unique series when it arrives. Speak against Colliderproducer Stephen Broussard said it’s a “very different” type of story than what we’ve seen before in the MCU, adding, “”It feels very grounded and spiritual in a way that feels fresh to us.”
That “spiritual” aspect has a lot to do with Echo’s Native American heritage. In the comics, Maya Lopez is a descendant of the Cheyenne Nation, an indigenous tribe that strongly believes that all living things are spiritually connected. Given the show’s synopsis confirms that Maya will explore her heritage and reconcile with her past, we expect her Cheyenne roots to play a big part.
Speaking of her past, we’ll get some insight into Maya’s upbringing and how she joined Fisk’s criminal empire. CWGST claims we’ll see a flashback to William Lopez’s death in 2019, how Maya was affected by that loss, her first interaction with Fisk, and her training to become the new leader of the tracksuit mafia (according to CWGST). Echo could even have audience-friendly ties to Netflix’s Daredevil series, with CWGST suggesting it will officially sanctify Netflix’s entire live-action adaptation as part of the MCU.
Potentially major Echo spoilers follow.
Marvel fans who saw it Hawkeye and/or read comics starring Echo and know that her main superpower is photographic reflexes. Essentially, she is able to mimic other people’s skills/movements, just like Black Widow villain Taskmaster.
Presumably we’ll see Echo hone her mimicry-based powers in her series then, right? Not quite. Maya even gets a major superhero-style upgrade – and it’s all thanks to her ancestors.
According to CWGST, Echo will see the titular character gain new abilities through countless Native American tattoos. The first, manifesting in her hands, will grant her superhuman strength. The next will give her a sharpshooting ability and “manifest the same weapon as the ancestor that gives her strength”. finally, she gets more speed and durabilitywhich will help her “determine the trajectory of a person/item’s movement”.
It appears that these rumors have some truth to them, based on a report from The direct. During Marvel’s portion of Disney’s 2022 edition of D23 Expothe first images of Echo was shown exclusively to attendees and teased Maya’s glowing hands.
Incidentally, in the comics, Echo is known for the white handprint Maya marks her face with when she uses her superhero alias. So it looks like Marvel is using this iconic look as the basis for the tattoos the MCU iteration of the character will get.
Echo trailer
Despite the aforementioned teaser being shown at D23 Expo 2022, Echo has not yet publicly released a trailer. With the show arriving in just over three months, we’re hoping one drops relatively soon. You know, as long as the show isn’t postponed.
How does Echo affect the MCU?
Echo is expected to be the second series exploring the MCU’s new street-level production line. Hawkeye was the first and, based on events that happened on that show, and that will be set in Echowill set up multiple Disney Plus series (and possibly one movie) where D’Onofrio’s Fisk is the overarching villain.
Why do we say that? According to CWGST, Fisk will run for mayor of New York — at least once he recovers from his eye injury — and win that election. Of course, installing the boss of a criminal empire as mayor won’t be good news for New York’s superhero contingent, as Mayor Fisk will likely install them as enemies of the state.
So, who might be affected by Mayor Fisk potentially cracking down on these so-called vigilantes? For starters, Daredevil. As we said, Daredevil and Kingpin will be the protagonist and antagonist of Daredevil: Born Again, so expect Mayor Fisk’s storyline to spill over into The Man Without Fear TV show. Echo is also expected to come in Reborn (according to D’Onofrio, as reported by the Daredevil updates Twitter account) and, after shooting her adoptive uncle Hawkeyeyou can be sure that he will also call to bring her to justice.
On the movie side, spiderman 4, which is in the very early stages of development, could be impacted by Fisk’s rise to mayor of New York. Kingpin is one of them Spider-Man‘s most notable nemesis, so seeing this pair toe-to-toe on the big screen would definitely get bums on plywood chairs. Following the events of No way home, it looks like Tom Holland’s webslinger is going to be the friendly neighborhood version of Spidey we’ve been waiting for. And now that the wallcrawler’s identity is a closely guarded secret after what happened No way home, this masked hero could be in Fisk’s sights soon enough. Big screen Spider-Man and Daredevil team up against Kingpin, anyone?
