British woman, 19, ‘gets raped on beach’ while holidaying on Greek island of Ios

  • Comes amid a horrific spate of sexual assault allegations from Britons this summer

A British woman has accused an unknown man of raping her on a beach while on vacation on the Greek island of Ios, local media reported.

The 19-year-old tourist reportedly reported an assault to the Greek authorities shortly after midnight.

The teen told local police she was raped on the beach in the Mylopotas area sometime between 9 and 10:30 pm last night after drinking alcohol. Proto theme reports.

The ELAS has now launched an investigation to identify and arrest the alleged sex offender.

Mylopotas is one of the most popular beaches of Ios due to its beautiful sandy cove and crystal clear waters. It is located about 2 km south of the island’s capital, Chora.

The latest incident comes amid a horrific spate of sexual assault allegations by British women who holidayed abroad this summer.

Last month, a 21-year-old British tourist reported being raped in Rhodes by a 47-year-old Greek man.

She claimed the older man took her from a ‘health shop’ in Lindos and took her to a hotel in Pefkos, where he allegedly forced her to have sex with him.

That report came just 24 hours after an 18-year-old Briton claimed she was assaulted at a nightclub in Faliraki – some seven miles south of Pefkos. She told police she was injected with a sedative into her hair and then had complete amnesia.

Also in June, a 20-year-old British woman came forward to say she was raped in the sea while on holiday in Rhodes after visiting a beach with a 23-year-old Albanian man she met online.

The man, who insists the sex was consensual, was later released but was not allowed to leave Greece.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old British woman told Greek police earlier this month that she was raped by an Israeli man after meeting him at a nightclub in Athens.

She told authorities that during the assault, the man’s three friends appeared out of nowhere and filmed her with their cell phones.

There have also been reports of rape by British women in other popular destinations, such as the Spanish resort of Magaluf.

Yesterday it emerged that a group of five French tourists and one Swiss tourist were arrested after a British teenager was allegedly raped in the holiday resort.

A judge in the capital Palma found that video clips of the alleged rape were on at least one of the suspects’ phones, police said.

She met the suspected rapists on Monday evening and later went to the hotel room of one of the suspects, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the six, the Mallorca police press service quoted the alleged victim’s statement as saying.

The Guardia Civil showed up at the hotel after a call from the hotel’s security staff who found the young woman desperate.

Police arrested the suspects shortly afterwards, all over the age of 20. The alleged victim immediately received medical attention and counselling.

In July, two Irishmen were arrested on suspicion of raping a British tourist at a hotel – also in Magaluf. She told police that the men sexually assaulted her in the early hours of July 19.

Another 21-year-old British woman also claimed this summer that she was raped at a popular holiday beach in the Algarve after being dragged into the bushes after being separated from her friends.
