Gary Neville says Manchester United are ‘trying to get Harry Maguire out of the club’ after Erik ten Hag opted to use Victor Lindelof instead of him against Wolves at half-time

Gary Neville has claimed that Manchester United are ‘trying to get Harry Maguire out of the club’.

Much uncertainty remains over the centre-back’s future at Old Trafford after Man United accepted a £30 million offer from West Ham to sign him.

Mail Sport earlier this week that the 30-year-old was waiting to make a decision on whether to leave the club, but also reported today that the move had stalled as the club waited to sign a replacement for him before he could could leave.

Maguire started on the bench for Man United in their first Premier League match against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday Night Football,

Erik ten Hag had chosen to start Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as his two centre-backs, but the defender was in the running to play.

Martinez, meanwhile, was booked for a foul in the first half and it looked like he could receive a second yellow card, leading him to several ‘brash’ challenges during the first 45 minutes.

When asked if the booking was the reason Martinez was taken off the field, Neville told Sky Sports: “One hundred per cent. Martinez looks a little brash in his performance tonight. I think he’s just one shot away from a booking.”

At half-time he was replaced by Victor Lindelof in place of Maguire, who has played most notably in the left centre-back position throughout his United career.

And pointing out the tactics, Neville, who was an expert on Monday Night Football, claimed the club was trying to figure out a way to get the former captain out of the club.

Neville said: ‘They’re trying to get Harry Maguire out of the club and get their money for him, there’s no doubt about that.’

Maguire, who could take a £70,000 pay cut if he joins West Ham, has fallen behind Varane and Martinez and made just 16 Premier League appearances for the club last season, including just eight starts.

The defender joined the club in 2019 on a world record £80 million transfer for a defender and is on contract with the club until 2025.

And earlier this week, his manager suggested there could be a place for him in the future if he can “prove himself”.

“He has the ability to become a top center central defender,” Ten Hag said at a press conference.

“He’s the best for England, so why shouldn’t he be the best for us?

But he has to prove it. If he doesn’t have enough confidence to fight, then he has to go, then he has to make a decision. But I’m happy with him.’

On Monday Night Football, Neville was also asked to review Ten Hag’s first season, noting how he took charge at the club when it came to certain issues with Cristiano Ronaldo and releasing the England defender from his captaincy duties.

“Excellent,” he said, speaking of Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

“From where they were the year before with Ralph Rangnick and the start of the season when they lost all those games against Brighton and Brentford I was really happy with how he did last season because what I think he did was take control settle.

“He established control with Cristiano Ronaldo, he established control with the captain and Harry Maguire, the way he dealt with empathy with Jadon Sancho. period – I think he did very well Erik Ten Hag.
