North Curl Curl Beach rip: Man dies after five people go out to sea on Sydney’s northern beaches

  • Day at the beach ended in tragedy
  • Five swimmers rescued a week ago
  • Indian national Robin Kadyan later died in hospital

A man has died four days after he and friends were swept into the water off Sydney’s northern beaches, sparking a massive multi-agency rescue operation.

Emergency services were called to North Curl Curl Beach on August 6 after multiple triple-0 calls that five swimmers had been swept into a rip in the sea.

A 22-year-old man was unconscious when he was hoisted out of the water by the Life Saver helicopter.

Paramedics and a doctor from the rescue helicopter resuscitated the man before he was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in critical condition.

Sadly, Indian national Robin Kadyan lost his battle for life in hospital last Friday.

Mr. Kadyn’s heartbroken friends have since had a online fundraiser who raised nearly $50,000 in two days.

Proceeds will be used to return his body to India and help the family with funeral expenses.

“Doctors did their very best, but the brain damage was irreversible and he could not survive the incident,” the page reads.

“His family needs your support during this difficult time to arrange his funeral in India.

Mr Kadyan was one of five friends who were swept out to sea on a trip across the beach last Sunday, sparking a multi-agency rescue effort involving surf rescuers, marine police, Northern Beaches officers and five helicopters.

“They all tried to help each other regardless of the situation, yet three of them, including Robin, had to be rescued from the sea by paramedics and rescuers using helicopters and boats,” the page adds.

“Robin was taken to the nearest hospital in a very serious condition, where he fought for his life for days.”

Two men and a woman had already emerged from the water when emergency services arrived.

Another man, 21, was rescued by surf rescuers in an inflatable lifeboat.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a serious but stable condition. He has now been released from the hospital.

Mr Kadyan’s death comes weeks after another man in his 60s drowned in nearby Curl Curl.

A third man in his 60s died in South Curl Curl in January.
