SIR CLIVE WOODWARD: Steve Borthwick must sort out England’s discipline issues as it could cost them the Rugby World Cup

  • Owen Farrell was shown a red card against Wales and could miss the start of the World Cup
  • It is not the first time that the England captain has let himself down at Twickenham
  • Steve Borthwick needs to act now as they may regret it during the tournament

England won and they can go on but Steve Borthwick needs to deal with the team’s discipline issues because it’s going to cost you a World Cup.

There’s no bigger fan of Owen Farrell than me – he should be captain and he should be England’s fly-half – but it was a red card and he needs to look in the mirror and tell himself to tackle lower . It’s not the first time he’s let himself down at Twickenham.

The three yellows in the second half, for Freddie Steward, Ellis Genge and then Farrell, before it was upgraded were correct calls and Henry Arundell got one before the break, so Borthwick must act now.

He should sit down with his team and go through the discipline issues and ask the players if there was anything they could have done to avoid getting a yellow card, either during training or during the match itself. Knockout rugby means there’s no Monday morning and that’s what’s going on in the World Cup.

Thinking correctly under pressure is a key skill at this level and England really need to learn the right lessons.

Every player has to take responsibility and understand that you kill your team if you get a yellow card and you are out if you get a red card. You don’t want to be the guy in a few months who says, ‘We lost the World Cup because I got a yellow or red card.’

You have to put it right on the line on the field, but you can’t afford to go over the line and England went over the line. It’s another lesson in the importance of keeping all 15 players on the field, because it can cost you everything if you’re a man, or two, or three, down. Having three boys in jail at once is virtually unheard of and that gave Wales their second try as England didn’t have the numbers.

I thought England would win by more, but when you have three in the sin bin at once you have to say, ‘Come on.’ You have to play with great physicality and great skill, but you also have to use your brain.

If England lose their opening game against Argentina, they're going to have a hard time

If England lose their opening game against Argentina, they’re going to have a hard time

Everyone asks how you can coach this, but you can and it’s something that Borthwick got into the minds of his team. That is a huge thing for England to reckon with. World Cups are about knockout rugby, even the opening game against Argentina on September 9 is a knockout game for me.

If England lose that game, they’re going to have a hard time. You have to learn how to keep players on the field in high pressure matches.

George Ford came on and he’s clearly a very, very good player and England are lucky to have him and Marcus Smith as their other fly halves. Maro Itoje was at his best again and there are a lot of positives, but it was just a trial match and I don’t think they should award caps for that.

England kicked one penalty in the first half and one in the second, leaving Wales down to 14 men when they should have tried. You have a scrum under the posts, so why not try it? Pretend you’re in a World Cup game, imagine England playing Wales in a quarter final, we’re six points behind, how are we going to win the game?

These are trial games, so use them to practice such situations. They should be saying, ‘This is the World Cup, how are we going to get seven points?’ You can coach to play under pressure, just as you can coach to keep your discipline under pressure.

And I would like England to stop celebrating when they get a ball or a penalty. They celebrate them like they just won the World Cup. You have backs running in and tapping forward on the back and I hate it.

England won and a defeat would have been terrible, but they need to get their discipline right.
