A former New York Giants player appeared in court in New York City and admitted that he tried to sell fentanyl-laced drugs outside his Harlem apartment while on compassionate release.
Clyde “Peter” Hall, 84, referenced his earlier career in the NFL when he told a Manhattan federal court judge that he knew what he was doing while trying to sell cocaine.
“I was a professional athlete. All my life I’ve lived by the standards,” Hall, who appeared in a tan jumpsuit, told Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil. “So the answer is yes, I knew what I was doing against the law.”
Hall was compassionately released from prison during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving a 20-year sentence for financial fraud.
It was at this time that he was apprehended while attempting to sell six kilograms of cocaine on April 24, 2021.
Clyde Hall, who played for the Giants in the 1960s, has pleaded guilty to attempting to sell drugs
Hall eventually sold the drugs to an undercover Drug Enforcement Agency agent
Hall admitted to selling the drugs laced with the illegal and dangerous substance fentanyl
Hall said he was unaware that the person who bought the drugs was an informant working for the Drug Enforcement Administration and that phone conversations between Hall and the officer were recorded.
The former wide receiver faced a life sentence before agreeing to a plea deal on Thursday.
The reduced charges will see him serve a possible prison sentence of 11 to 14 years under federal sentencing guidelines for attempting to sell 40 grams of a controlled substance containing fentanyl.
In addition, Hall will have to serve the remainder of his 20-year prison sentence – which expires in 2026.
Clyde accepted full responsibility for his role. Despite his age, we continue to hope that he does not have to spend the rest of his life in prison,” his lawyer Jason Goldman said.
Hall will be sentenced on December 5. He appeared in 12 games for the Giants during the 1961 season – making just two catches for 22 yards.
