  • Wout Weghorst has posted a heartfelt farewell message to Manchester United
  • Weghorst scored just twice in 31 appearances after signing on loan in January
  • The Dutch striker has since returned to Burnley, but has been linked with Everton

Wout Weghorst has thanked Manchester United fans for their support and says his ‘dreams have come true’ during his six-month loan spell at the club.

The towering Dutch striker scored just two goals in 31 appearances after joining Burnley on loan in the January transfer window.

However, he still looked back positively on his time with Erik ten Hag’s side and posted a video on Instagram showing off his favorite moments in a United shirt.

Weghorst ended a loan spell at Besiktas in Turkey to join United for the second half of last season, but the Carabao Cup winners have decided not to sign him.

Against the backing of the popular Old Trafford version of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, Weghorst expressed his pride to have represented the club.

The Dutch striker begins the video by addressing the Old Trafford faithful directly: ‘Dear Man United fans, thank you for everything.

“I really enjoyed every second at this club. From winning silverware to scoring my first goal against (Real) Betis at Old Trafford.

‘Dreams became reality. Incredibly proud to wear the badge. Wish you all the best for the future. Manchester United fans – thank you for everything.’

Weghorst was criticized early in his United career for touching the iconic This Is Anfield sign ahead of an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals.

But his determined heist play and impressive air skills made him something of a cult hero by the end of his time in Manchester.

Fans reacted to the video on Twitter and thanked Weghorst for his efforts.

One of them wrote: ‘The man knew what it meant to play for Manchester United’.

Another added: “He was a good boy.”

Others were less complimentary, with one fan writing, “He was useless but he gave it his all and you could see how much it meant to him every time he wore the shirt.” I will miss Weggy’.

Others expressed a similar sentiment. One fan wrote: ‘He had all the passion in the world, just not the ability, Weghorst will always appreciate, once a red always a red’.

Another added: “We will miss your passion. You always gave us 100% when you put on the shirt and we will always be proud of you for that.”

In an interview with United’s official website, he outlined the importance of winning the Carabao Cup after Ten Hag’s men beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley.

He said: ‘The final was of course the first time at Wembley for me.

“To win there, also my contribution to the game, it was just a beautiful memory and a beautiful day to win my first trophy.”

Weghorst returned to Burnley in the summer, but did not play for the Clarets in the pre-season.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a possible return to Besiktas and a move to Everton, but no move has materialized.
