New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone took a shower early in Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox after arguing with home plate umpire Laz Diaz.
Diaz, who has consistently been one of the most inaccurate umpires in Major League Baseball over the years, called up New York shortstop Anthony Volpe with a called strike three in the eighth inning that looked like he had just touched the edge of the plate missing.
Boone was seen on a replay yelling at the referee, “Laz, what the hell are you doing,” leading to his ejection.
That caused the manager to sprint out of the dugout and into Diaz’s face. The referee, never one to back down from a shouting match, handed it straight back to Boone.
Next, the Yankees manager drew a line in the dirt—where he thought the field was going—and then crouched behind the plate before mocking Diaz’s “strike three” punch-out signal.

Boone (R) was vocally critical of Diaz’s inaccuracy in calling balls and strikes on Monday
It was after the pair argued for a while that Boone drew a line in the sand for Diaz
The pair continued their heated conversation for a few more moments before Boone finally retreated through the step of the hollowed-out tree and back to the visitor’s clubhouse.
Boone has been ejected for the sixth time this season – the most of any other manager in the American League this year. He has also won back-to-back AL manager ejection titles.
It was a night of frustration for the Yankees – who lost 5-1 to the White Sox on a night that left them 13 men on base.
After the game ended, Boone admitted that Diaz may have been right about calling a strike against Volpe.
“I actually heard that Anthony’s might have been a strike,” Boone admitted. “I just thought there were a lot of pitches all night and culminating I think with DJ (LeMahieu) – a few pitches and his at bat – where he struck out with the first and third there, I’m not going to get into that. We had our chances tonight and just couldn’t capitalize on them.
Boone also praised White Sox starter Dylan Cease, who walked seven batters but struckout six and held the Yankees to one basehit.
“His stuff was nasty…in the end, we did a good job setting the table, but we couldn’t punch through with one hit.
Part of that was his stuff was nasty and effectively wild, so it made him hard to hit. That said, we’ve had a lot of opportunities and we need to capitalize on them.”
The internet immediately took Boone’s gesture and got to work with it – making memes about him
Boone’s reaction was immediately deemed “meme-worthy” by the internet, and several people tried to compare the manager’s reaction.
Some compared it to the dance moves in Soulja Boy’s popular 2000 rap song “Crank That.”
The Twitter account of sports pop culture ArtButMakeItSports compared Boone’s mannerisms to that of an 18th-century French painter.
The Yankees-focused Twitter account of New York sports television network SNY even thought Boone deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of Diaz.
New York now falls last in the AL East and five-and-a-half games back in the Wild Card race.
