  • Social media users labeled the latest update as ‘heartbreaking’

The internet is heartbroken after a dog who was awaiting adoption for 500 days was returned to the shelter just a week later.

The American pit bull, named Drogo, was originally brought to the Austin Animal Center, Texas, in March 2022 after his owner was evicted, according to News week.

But they never came back to pick him up and the three-year-old has struggled to find a home ever since.

Last month, after waiting nearly two years, he was finally adopted, but it wasn’t to be – with the internet labeling the latest development as “heartbreaking.”

The Austin Animal Center, which regularly shares updates on social media, has documented Drogo’s journey.

Workers have said the dog, which is house trained, leash trained and loves car rides, is often overlooked by potential owners.

However, in July it looked like he might finally get his chance as part of a loving family when someone came forward.

But a week later, his new owners brought him back after “pinching” the adopter.

The shelter shared a heartbreaking video to TikTok, which has been viewed more than 99,000 times, in which they wrote, “If you wait 500 days to find a home and then get sent back after a week.

Shelter dogs need time to get used to a new home. Drogo didn’t even get a chance.

“Now he’s back in the shelter waiting for his real forever family.”

It also added in the caption, “We are all crushed that Drogo was returned to the shelter so quickly.

“He was one of the dogs that stayed at the shelter the longest and now he’s back. He’s devastated. It’s not fair.’

Contributor Kelsey Cler told Newsweek, “He seems to resent being back at the shelter. There has been no interest.’

And dozens of other social media users rushed to the comments to share their grief.

One wrote: ‘How heartbreaking. I would totally adopt him if I could. I pray his forever family gets him soon.”

Another added, “I’m sorry Drogo, but your forever family out there. I hope they get to you faster now, so you don’t have to wait so long.’

And a third said, ‘No. That is so sad!! He deserves the best and most loving family.’

Drogo is currently still up for adoption – at no cost.

His profile page on the shelter’s website states, “Drogo is a charmer and meets people so gentle it’s hard not to fall in love with him on first meeting.

“When he helps train new volunteers at the shelter, you hear the oohs and aws in the room…

“If you bring him home, he’s going to want to chill on the couch with you. He thinks he’s a lap dog and no one had the heart to tell him otherwise.’

It continued: “This affectionate boy dreams of a home where he can have unlimited pets and love from his people.”
