Revealed: The Reason You May Be Missing Facebook Posts

  • Did you know about Facebook Messenger’s hidden spam tab?

Facebook Messenger is used by about a billion people around the world – but many don’t know that a secret tab keeps them from getting more messages.

If you load up your Messenger app on your smartphone and tap the menu – denoted by three horizontal lines at the top left of the screen – you’ll see “message requests” appear in the drop-down list.

Click on this ‘maybe you know’ and you’ll be presented with a slew of messages you might want to filter through.

Facebook Messenger is the highly popular instant messenger app launched in 2011 and now owned by Meta. It was initially limited to Facebook users only (stock image)

Immediately to the right of that is the “spam” category – with even more messages.

Facebook adds unknown requests to this tab assuming you don’t know the senders, after deeming the messages inappropriate or suspicious.

If you’re too scared to open the messages, you can select “edit” at the top right and then choose the messages you want to delete – they have a preview so you can gauge their content without opening them.

If Facebook takes these extra steps on your behalf, it means your primary inbox isn’t cluttered with potential spam.

However, it also means that you miss important messages and cannot decide for yourself whether something is unsafe.

If you're too scared to open the dodgy messages, you don't have to - you can select edit at the top right, pick the ones you think you'll find most offensive, and delete them, all without opening them

Thankfully, if you decide to open one of these messages, the sender won’t be notified that you’re reading it, or be able to tell if you’re active or not – unless you choose to reply.

Likewise, if you choose to ignore the message, they will never know.
