  • Doctors surprised by the recovery of the young Aussies

A young Australian feared permanent brain damage after falling and hitting his head in Croatia. This has shocked doctors and is expected to make a ‘full recovery’.

Nicholas Jakovcevic, 20, from Sydney, was airlifted to KBC Spilled hospital after falling from a fence on the Croatian holiday island of Brac.

The accident happened around 3 am on July 27 in the village of Donji Humac as he was taking part in festivities in honor of the local patron saint Saint Ana.

The 20-year-old was placed in intensive care after suffering a head injury and concussion, with doctors initially fearing for his life.

However, Mr. Jakovcevic has made doctors and is expected to make a full recovery in the next few days when he leaves the hospital.

“He surprised the doctors with a quick recovery,” said a source at the hospital Daily telegram.

“He is performing some additional checks, but we expect him to leave the hospital in the next few days.”

It is believed that Mr. Jakovcevic remained under medical supervision for additional checks and did not require surgery for any of his injuries.

The young Aussie gained support from the locals on the island before his parents, including one from Brac Island, traveled to Croatia to be with their son.

He was described by the locals of Brac as a ‘nice Aussie man’ who traveled to Brac ‘the land of his predecessors’.

“It looks like the fence broke and he fell and injured his head,” confirmed a local who attended the Saint Ana’s festivities.

Local food and live music are part of the festivities that take place every July 26 and include a large celebration near the hilltop church of the village where motor vehicles are blessed.

Croatian police have launched an investigation to determine how Mr. Jakovcevic fell from the fence.

Only 50 minutes by ferry from Split, Brac has a population of 13,000, but only 177 live in the small village of Donji Humac.

A spokesman for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said consular assistance is being provided to an Australian man who is in a hospital in Croatia.
