DC United ‘releases Taxi Fountas amid allegations he uttered a racial slur against a black teammate during the game’…just months after being accused of calling an MLS opponent the N-word

DC United is releasing Taxi Fountas after an allegation that he uttered a racial slur at a teammate during a recent game, according to reports.

It is the second time in nine months that Fountas has been embroiled in a racism scandal, having previously been investigated by MLS over allegations that he called an opponent the N-word during a match.

According to ESPND.C. United has now made the decision to release Fountas weeks after he was placed on administrative leave by the team.

The latest alleged incident occurred during a July 15 game against New England Revolution in which Fountas – who is white – began arguing with black teammate Nigel Robertha in the 67th minute.

The Athletic reports that the altercation on the pitch continued into the dressing room after the game, when Robertha hit Fountas with a foam roller.

It is alleged that Robertha later told team officials that Fountas used the N word, leading to an immediate MLS investigation.

Both players were initially placed on administrative leave, but Robertha was reinstated on 24 July, while Fountas remains away from the team and now faces a mutual termination of his contract.

The result of the competition investigation into the alleged incident has yet to be released and Fountas has not been charged.

Nine months ago, the Greek player was at the center of another MLS investigation after he was accused of making racist comments against then-Inter Miami defender Damion Lowe.

The alleged incident took place on September 18 and was allegedly overheard by one of Lowe’s teammates Aime Mabika.

The subsequent investigation found Mabika’s claim “credible,” but MLS said it could not prove whether the N-word had been used against Lowe.

In the days following the conclusion of the investigation, Fountas broke his silence to hit back at the allegations and insist that he was not using the N-word against his opponent.

Fountas wrote on social media: “I am pleased to announce (sic) that the MLS investigation into the racism allegation has been completed and closed.

“No evidence of racist behavior by me. I always respect the culture, religion and every human being.

“Now I can concentrate again on football, my club DC United and the Greek national team.”

DC United boss Wayne Rooney immediately decided to eliminate Fountas – who had made it 2-2 minutes earlier – the next time the ball went out of play during the game in September.

Rooney was praised by then Inter Miami boss Phil Neville for his actions, the latter saying he had “gained more respect” for him “than for any goal he had scored in the past.”

Fountas has appeared in 17 MLS games this season and scored six goals, the last of which came against Inter Miami on July 9.
