USWNT triggers Australian football fans by calling Melbourne ‘Melby’ ahead of crucial World Cup clash: ‘Every Australian you supported is now hoping Sweden wins’
- Tweet from USWNT surprised many football fans
- Strangely referred to as Melbourne as ‘Melby’
- USWNT will play against Sweden in round of 16 on Sunday
- Team USA was disappointing in the World Cup
The already polarizing Team USA has further triggered dozens of Australian soccer fans after inexplicably calling Melbourne ‘Melby’ ahead of their Round of 16 World Cup clash against Sweden on Sunday.
Lucky to still be in the tournament after a 0-0 draw with Portugal in the group stage, a tweet from their official account on Friday night left supporters confused.
“Under the lights in Melby,” the tweet read, accompanied by an image of Vlatko Andonovski’s team on the training ground.
It didn’t take long for fans of the world game – especially those in Melbourne – to criticize the terrible new nickname.
“Melbun, Melbs, Melbin but never Melby,” one tweeted in response, while another said, “No! Our beautiful town has NEVER EVER been called Melby. Many neutral supporters may therefore jump on Sweden’s bandwagon and you only have yourself to thank for that.’

Even A-League side Melbourne Victory weighed in on the chat online, tweeting “excuse me.”
AAP journalist Anna Harrington wrote, “Melby?! Sweden should continue on default.’
The exploits of American players in New Zealand and now Australia have generated much controversy in recent weeks.
Whether it’s the silence during the national anthem or the embarrassing thing about dancing on the pitch after the draw with Portugal, they’re quickly becoming the team everyone loves to hate.
American TV personality Megyn Kelly took it a step further, branding the team “idiots” for their lack of patriotism before handpicking veteran midfielder Megan Rapinoe.

Kelly believes Rapinoe, 38, has ‘poisoned’ the USWNT, with the presenter saying she hopes Sweden will beat them in the round of 16.
“Megan Rapinoe, she is the leader of it all… She is not a starter. So that’s why she’s not on camera when they sing the national anthem, but she’s behind this,” she said while hosting the Megyn Kelly Show.
“She has poisoned the whole team against the country they play for. I don’t know about you, but I don’t support them. I’m not with them.
“I hope they lose… It’s embarrassing. These girls are embarrassing. They should be ashamed.’
Kick-off on Sunday in ‘Melby’ is 7 p.m.
