“There were also no signs of anything leading up to the day,” he said.

β€œIt was such a shock that it feels unreal. It really was an inexplicable tragedy.’

Mildenstein’s family described him as “ecstatic” in the moments leading up to his sudden death and said they had hoped “with all their hearts” that he would be sent to Tokyo.

“He talked about nothing but his mission over the past year,” Kaelten said. “From a young age he dreamed of serving his mission in Tokyo.”

The mood when Mildenstein read the news had already been bittersweet, with the family aware that they might not see him for the next two years.

“My whole family β€” my grandfather, my uncles and a bunch of my cousins — all served in Japan,” Kaelten said.

β€œIt was something he wanted to be a part of, he always wanted to go to Japan for his mission.

“You can’t really ask, it’s just a lottery you want to call.”

Kaelten said this was a real shock, noting that he and his brother have been going to theme parks and the gym together for the past week.

Liam was a very sweet person. He was very innocent and always wanted to help people and do good. He had a childlike heart. He was a musician. He played drums and Irish flute and all sorts of instruments.’

The family launched one Gofundme to cover “unexpected funeral expenses” and has already reached its $30,000 goal.

“This is all completely unreal and being far from home creates so many difficult circumstances that we are seeking all the help we can,” said the Gofundme, written by Liam’s parents.

β€œWe want to make sure that Liam can be buried peacefully in the midst of all this chaos. Thank you for the love and support we feel from all of you.
