No one can agree on how many blocks are in this mind-boggling optical illusion – so, how many do you see?
An optical illusion has created a storm among puzzle fans who fiercely debate the correct answer on social media.
Optical illusions are a fun way to test both our eyes and brains, using color, light, and patterns to create images that can be deceptive and misleading – and make us doubt what we’re really seeing.
The latest is a classic puzzle shared by Crazy Illusions at Twitterasking if you can see three or four blocks in a simple illustration.
The account regularly publishes mind-bending optical illusions to its 151,000 followers around the world, which simply asks the viewer to indicate exactly how many blocks they see, but no one can agree.
This optical illusion – shared on Twitter account @crazyillusions – asks people to work out how many blocks they can see, while giving answers of ‘3’ and ‘4’
In the photo – along with the caption: “Can you calculate how many blocks there are?” – two cartoon characters are arguing over a stack of blocks between them.
They both point to the pile, with one calling out the number ‘4’ while the other insists on the number ‘3’.
After spending time observing the image, deluded Twitter users took to the comments section to share their answers — with many claiming the real answer is inconclusive.
One stunned user said, “I’ve been looking at this for 30 minutes now and I still only see three blocks. Am I doing something wrong?’
Another commented, “If you look closely enough, it’s definitely 3, great optical illusion.”
Many disputed this answer, with one person arguing, “I don’t understand how anyone can see 3 lol.”
Another agreed, saying, “It’s 4 — if you see 3, there’s something wrong with you.”
Others reported seeing both numbers, with one saying, “4, twice I’ve seen 3, but usually 4,” while another said, “Sometimes I see 4, sometimes 3. Depends on the angle I guess .’
Inflated Twitter users rally in the comments to share their answers – with many claiming the real answer is inconclusive
Some people became so perplexed when they looked at the picture that their answer was neither “3” nor “4”.
One exclaimed, ‘I’m seeing double! Six blocks!’ while another said, “I counted 7!”
One commenter stopped guessing and jokingly suggested, “There are no blocks, those are French fries.”
An end user had a total breakdown and said, ‘Bro you need to stop posting this, my mind won’t stop freaking out. These keep me awake at night. I do not understand. I can never understand it.’
The puzzle is a variation of the classic devil’s fork illusion, also known as an impossible object.
The impossible object is a 2D illustration that the brain immediately interprets as a 3D object.
In the case of the devil’s fork illusion, it looks like a three-pronged trident or two pillars, depending on how you look at it.
And so it turns out that the puzzle that asks if you can see three or four blocks is all a matter of perspective.
If you look down on it from above you tend to see three, while if you look from the side you think you see four.
It comes after another optical illusion claims it can determine whether you’re logical or intuitive based on what you see first in this photo.
The mind-bending image was shared by the US-based PsychologyLove100 TikTok account.
It shows an image that contains several elements – which one do you see first when you look at it?
According to the social media account, what you decipher first in the overall picture determines whether you are an intuitive or a logical type of person and what your thought process is.
Take a quick look at the image to see what catches your eye first…
This mind-connecting image shared by the US-based PsychologyLove100 TikTok account claims it can determine whether you’re a logical or an intuitive person
“If you have seen three bears first, you have an analytical mind, you are good at analyzing facts and figures and you have a logical approach,” the video claims.
“You don’t act impulsively. You prefer to take things one step at a time,’ he adds.
The video further explains that people who think logically tend to use conventions and rules to organize their thinking process.
That also shows up in debates and arguments, where a logical person will have a more detail-oriented thought process than others.
The video also explains that people who think analytically tend not to see a problem as a whole, but to break it down into separate concepts when tackling it to make it easier to solve.
That makes them particularly good at solving problems with an eye for detail.
But people who saw mountains rather than bears are “intuitive thinkers,” the video claims.
This means they tend to follow their instincts, which are usually right when faced with problems.
These people also rely on their intuition, even if other people have contrary advice.
While they are usually right when they follow their gut, this intuitive course of action also means they sometimes overlook facts and rely on their past experiences to guide their decision-making.
However, this trait does not mean that intuitive people are indecisive, as they are usually efficient at making decisions for themselves.
They are generally smart and well placed to assess situations as a whole, and are likely to think outside the box when solving problems.
