An Indiana daycare worker died of water poisoning after swallowing about 64 ounces in just 20 minutes.
Ashley Summers, a mother of two who died at the age of 35, shortly after a relaxing day at Lake Freeman over the July 4 long weekend.
She felt lightheaded and had headaches, symptoms of dehydration, but no amount of water could quench her thirst.
On the Tuesday after the holiday, Ms Summers was hospitalized with severe brain swelling that baffled doctors struggling to clear it.
Although Mrs. Summers returned home, she collapsed in her garage soon after and did not regain consciousness. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with water toxicity, also called hyponatremia, which comes from having too much water in the body and not enough sodium.
Hyponatremia is characterized by insufficient sodium in the body, an essential electrolyte that helps regulate the delicate balance of fluids in cells and maintain proper nerve and muscle function. Drinking too much water dilutes sodium levels in the blood
When Devon Miller, brother of Ashley Summers, learned of his sister’s condition, he was in disbelief.
He said“It was a big shock to all of us. I was like, is this something?’
Mr. Miller added: “She just felt like she couldn’t get enough water… When they left the sandbar until they got to the wharf, it was about a 20 minute boat ride…she drank four bottles of water in that 20 minutes.’
