Donald Trump was charged federally on Tuesday with attempting to overturn the 2020 election, accusing the former president of attacking the “foundation” of American democracy.
Trump, 77, has been charged with four charges: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights.
He was charged alone, but references are made to six co-conspirators. The six are accused of helping Trump with his plan to stay in power, but they will not be charged.
Trump will appear before a judge in Washington DC on Thursday to face charges. His campaign said the charges were part of an effort to stop him from reclaiming the White House in 2024.
