Netflix postpones the release of six films because of the writers and actors strike
Things are going on at Netflix. Not only is the top streaming service removing one of its own Netflix Originals in the UK, The power of the dogbut multiple worldwide releases have been pushed back to 2024 as the writers’ and actors’ strike continues to bite.
Of course, Netflix isn’t the only studio moving major releases. As we reported earlier this week, Hulu and Sony are also delaying many new movie and TV show releases, and we expect many more as the strike continues. The strike will affect not only movies and shows that are being shot, but also reshoots and promotional work for completed movies and TV shows.
The removal of The power of the dog is a strange one. It’s a Netflix Original, but will be removed from the UK streaming service on August 18. While Netflix claims in the film’s credits that the film was produced by multiple companies, including BBC Films and the New Zealand Film Commission, it seems likely that the Netflix Original branding was for a limited time – a period that is now coming to an end. But it’s unclear what will happen to the movie itself and whether you’ll be able to stream it on another service this month.
If you haven’t streamed it yet, you might want to correct that. Directed by Jane Campion and featuring a cast that includes Kirsten Dunst and Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s a beautiful and sometimes ferocious film. If The New Yorkers put it into words: “Amidst all the film’s romantic beauty, darkness and violence lurk, including in unexpected places. What appears to be a love story turns out to be a story of revenge.”
What Movies Has Netflix Delayed To 2024?
The latest delays affect six movies, including A Family Affair, Damsel, Elevator, Players, Shirley And Spaceman, according to What’s on Netflix.
A family affair was originally slated for a November release, but it’s been swapped for Rustin, which will vent in place. The romantic comedy starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King will now stream sometime in 2024.
damsel, a fantasy film starring Millie Bobby Brown as an unusual princess, has been pushed back from October 2023 to sometime in 2024, though a more precise release window has not been specified. The same goes for romantic comedy Playersstarring Tom Ellis, Gina Rodriguez and Liza Koshy, which has been rescheduled from Fall 2023 for a date yet to be announced.
We have a release date for Kevin Hart’s comedy Lifting, although. The release has been moved from August 2023 to January 12, 2024.
ShirleyRegina King’s biopic of Shirley Chisholm, is another movie with an TBD 2024 release date, just like the sci-fi drama Spacemanin which Adam Sandler is the Czech Republic’s first-ever astronaut.
With the end of the strike in sight, we’re likely to see many more release schedule changes for new Netflix movies like this one, not just on Netflix, but on the top streaming services.
