Aussies slam the Logies claiming ‘ego stroking’ awards show proves free-to-air TV is dead – as they call worst offender of the night
A fierce internet debate has led to the relevance of the TV Week Logie Awards.
On Monday, a poster started a thread on Reddid titled “why does anyone care about the Logies?”
The post began with “Serious Question: Why Does Anyone Care Who Wins at the Logies?”
“I mean, Sonia won the grand prize and she’s just hosting some sh*tty reality shows,” it continued, referring to Sonia Kruger and her Gold Logie win.
The exasperated redditor had a lot more to say, suggesting that “Free-to-air is going through the gargle and all these cardboard “celebs” are dressing up to the nines and smiling at the camera like everything is going great.”

“I mean Sonia won the grand prize and she’s just hosting some crappy reality shows,” the Reddit post read, referring to Sonia Kruger (pictured) and her recent Gold Logie win
“Even the saving grace of sport is now so subpar that people don’t mind paying for Fox just because the coverage on Channel Nine and Channel Seven is so bad.”
Within 24 hours, the thread had garnered more than 650 comments, many of which echoed the sentiments of the original post.
One commentator claimed ‘only the TV channels care about the Logies. It’s nothing but an exercise in ego stroking for worn out wannabe actors’ to which another replied ‘so it’s LinkedIn, except for TV shows’.

One answer answered ‘who cares about the Logies?’ with ‘cocaine dealers concern’
Another post in the thread suggested ‘the only people who care are the ones attending the awards. It’s a circlejerk like all other celebrity awards, Logies is just very d-list and trashy.’
Meanwhile, Aussies on Twitter were equally unimpressed, with many television personalities criticized for their contributions to Australian TV’s night of nights.
“If Tina Sparkle is the most popular person on Australian TV, it’s over,” one disgruntled Twitter user tweeted, referring to Kruger’s character in Strictly Ballroom.

But the Gold Logie winner wasn’t the only one to receive criticism.

“He’s still as funny and selfish as ever,” one tweet read, as many more expressed their displeasure and disgust for the former Hey Hey It’s Saturday Host.
Another called the TV presenter a “national disgrace.”
During its run, Hey Hey It’s Saturday had its controversy.
Last year, TV veteran Daryl was called upon to perform Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World in blackface on the show, set in the 1980s.
Another incident in 2009 involved a comedy troupe dressed as the Jackson Five in blackface for Hey Hey’s regular Red Faces segment.

American singer Harry Connick Jr. was a guest judge on the episode and gave the performance a score of zero, saying that he would never have appeared on the show had he known blackface would be involved.
At the time, host Daryl apologized to Harry at the end of the live segment, saying “I think we may have offended you with that act and I sincerely apologize on behalf of all of us.”
“Because I know it’s an insult to your compatriots to have such a blackface routine on the show, so I apologize to you.”

Harry replied, “I know it’s done with humor, but we’ve spent so much time trying not to make black people look like buffoons that when we see something like that, we really take it to heart.”
“I feel like I’m at home here and if I knew this was going to be part of the show I probably wouldn’t have.”
Meanwhile, Channel Seven took a big win in the ratings on Sunday night thanks to their broadcast of the 2023 Logie Awards.
TV’s night of nights, hosted by prankster Sam Pang, attracted 877,000 subway viewers for the network.

It was a huge success for the network after they took over the broadcasting rights to Channel Nine’s Logies last year.
Still, Seven’s ratings weren’t quite what the network had hoped for after Nine managed to rack up an impressive 885,000 viewers for its 2022 broadcast.
The Logies had been a household name at Nine for six decades and many of its stars, including the late Bert Newton, were strongly associated with the event.
