Former Manchester United youth star signs for Sheffield Wednesday after leaving Old Trafford last month

  • Di’Shon Bernard spent six years with Man United, making one appearance for the first team
  • The defender has played on loan at Salford, Hull and most recently Portsmouth
  • Sheffield Wednesday say they beat the competition to sign the player

Sheffield Wednesday has signed defender Di’Shon Bernard following his departure from Manchester United.

Bernard spent six years at Old Trafford and made his debut for the Red Devils in a Europa League group stage defeat to Astana in November 2019.

The 22-year-old Jamaica international was on loan at Salford and Hull before returning to first-team training under Erik ten Hag during the first half of the 2022-23 season.

He did not do enough to break into the match squad and was loaned out to Portsmouth before becoming a free agent when his contract with United expired.

Bernard made 10 Pompey appearances last season and helped Jamaica reach the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.

The length of Bernard’s contract was not disclosed by the Owls.

The center half will be their fifth new recruit in the transfer window, following Reece James, Juan Delgado, Ashley Fletcher and Pol Valentin to Hillsborough.

In their announcement, Wednesday described the Wandsworth product as a cultured ball-playing centre-back and said they ‘beat stiff competition for his signature’.

Leaving United, Bernard tweeted: “While my time @manchesterunited has come to an end I am nothing but proud of my journey so far with all the experiences and all the achievements I have achieved along the way.

“A big thank you to all the staff, teammates and everyone who helped me on my journey.”
