An amputee woman has had her ear bitten off during a gruesome attack by two fangs on a picturesque tropical island.

Emergency services were called to Sailor Street on Palm Island, about 25 miles (40 km) off the coast of Townsville, just before 10 p.m. Monday night after reports emerged that a 51-year-old woman had been attacked by two dogs.

Queensland Police believe the woman was pulled from her wheelchair and bitten several times on the face, neck and arms.

Her right ear is believed to have been completely ripped off during the attack.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the woman was transported to Palm Island Hospital with stable injuries to her hands and face.

She was airlifted to Townsville University Hospital to undergo surgery while in a stable but serious condition.

The rural indigenous community is searching for the dogs responsible for the attack, which are likely to be euthanized.

The island is the largest indigenous community with borders in Australia, with approximately 4,000 people living on the island.

More to come.
