I’m A Vet – Here’s Why YOUR Dog Is Staring At You

  • Do they want to eat you or do they really love you?
  • @the.frenchie.vet let you know why your dog is looking at you so intensely

Whether you’re walking along the beach with them on a sunny day, or chasing their tails in a circle for hours – it’s truly a wonder what our four-legged friends are thinking about half the time.

In the UK we are a nation of dog lovers, with 29% of adults owning a pet dog according to PDSA — that’s a whopping 11 million dogs.

But even though the dog is man’s best friend, sometimes it’s hard to know what’s on our furry friends’ minds – especially when they’re staring at you intently.

Lucky for us, vet Christine Colamonico has shared insider information on her TikTok channel – @the.frenchie.vet – about why your dog is staring at you like that.

And it can be useful knowledge to have. After all, you don’t want to end up like the owners who paid thousands of dollars in vet bills only to hear that their pets were dramatic.

1. Your dog wants something from you

For most dog owners, probably not a day goes by that they don’t share their pack of Wotsits or half a sausage roll with their dog.

Dogs are often obsessed with food and once you give them a piece of the pie it’s hard to stop – target the *sad eyed puppy dog*.

And if your furry friend gives you an angry look, chances are they really want something from you.

Sometimes they look at you because they want to go for a walk, but it’s probably also because they want a sneaky piece of your treat, according to Christine.

The veterinarian who is committed to helping dogs with arthritis told her the following: “She wants a piece of biscuit, for example, or maybe she wants her favorite treat.”

2. They try to understand what you want

How much easier the world would be if our animals could talk and we knew exactly what they wanted.

But unfortunately we can’t and it’s probably just as hard for them to understand what we want – and with that comes the second reason why your dog looks at you sheepishly.

Christine joked, “She might be wondering why you’re looking at her or what are you saying to her.”

3. They love you!

There are many reasons why your dog, perhaps similar to the one pictured in this stock photo, is staring at you. But the most important thing is that they love you

Whether he looks to you for guidance or is confused, there are many reasons why your dog is staring at you beyond what Christine’s has already mentioned in her sage advice.

One major reason is that they often make eye contact with you because they love you, according to The Kennel Club.

A dog’s loving gaze is said to release oxytocin, otherwise known as a “feel good hormone,” for both you and your furry friend.

This hormone ensures that owner and dog feel comfortable and a sense of happiness. It also helps them maintain the loving bond that really solidifies dogs as man’s best friend.

So if your furry friend catches your eye from the far end of the couch, he might be trying to express how deeply he loves you — or that he wants to eat some of your bangers and mash.
