Wrexham’s Hollywood owner Rob McElhenney reveals striker Paul Mullin will be staying with him in California as he recovers from the punctured lung he suffered after a nasty tackle from Man United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop

Paul Mullin will stay with Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney in California as he recovers from a punctured lung suffered during a friendly match.

Mullin, 28, was crushed in an on-pitch collision with Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop during Tuesday’s game in San Diego, although the striker was released from hospital the following day.

With Wrexham’s star striker still recovering from his punctured lung, one of Wrexham’s Hollywood owners has confirmed that Mullin will stay with him in The Golden State until he’s fit enough to fly home.

In an interview with S4C, McElhenney said: ‘He’s fine. I just texted him this morning. He’s in San Diego and he’s coming to stay with us for a few weeks until he can leave and go back to Wales.’

Ryan Reynolds, who co-owns Wrexham with McElhenney, said he contacted Bishop following the goalkeeper’s involvement in the collision that wiped out Mullin.

The Deadpool actor sent the 23-year-old shot-stopper a cold message thanking him for the way he handled the incident and wishing him well for the future.

Bishop is now poised for a move to Championship side Sunderland, which appeared to have been finalized ahead of last week’s incident in San Diego.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham are preparing for the start of their League Two campaign and McElhenney was eager to get started.

The Mythic Quest star told S4C: ‘I can’t believe it’s starting again, but I’m so excited. It is Wrexham’s first time in 15 years in the EFL. I think the whole city will come for that too. And we hope for a good outcome.’

When pressured about preparations, the 46-year-old said: “We’ve played these friendlies and I know it’s almost completely last year’s squad. We have brought in very few new players, which I know are a welcome addition.

“But this is a lot from the same team that won last year, so the chemistry is through the roof. And Phil really believes we have a chance to get promoted again.’

Of his wishes for the year ahead, McElhenney said, “I’d like to see us continue to compete and be at the top of that table and have a chance at the end to move up to the next league.”

When asked if that was feasible, he replied: ‘Absolutely’.
