Pep Guardiola recently admitted that the financial strength of the Saudi Pro League can no longer be ignored after Manchester City were unable to stop Mahrez.

The footballer sealed a £30 million move with a reported wage of a whopping £750,000 a week, leaving City to make decisions about potential substitutions.

Premier League stars Jordan Henderson, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Edouard Mendy and Allan Saint-Maximin have also benefited from the wealth on offer in Saudi Arabia.

Guardiola – who claimed he wanted to keep Mahrez at the Etihad Stadium – believes more will follow, posing a problem for the country’s biggest clubs.

“Riyadh had an incredible offer and that’s why we couldn’t say don’t do it,” Guardiola said. “Our thoughts were that he would definitely stay here.

“A few months ago, when Cristiano (Ronaldo) went alone, no one could have imagined that so many top players would play in the Saudi league. There will be more in the future and therefore clubs need to be aware of what is happening.

Saudi is not about being a threat, it’s a reality. They want to create a strong competition and so far they are the competition that can do that. The Premier League spent more than the others because the organization is better and the broadcasting rights are higher.

“The Saudi league, I don’t know how long they can keep that up. But the players want to take this experience and play in that league. Saudi Arabia has changed the market.’

City have been eyeing wingers and like Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise but it remains to be seen how they replace Mahrez.

Guardiola suggested no like-for-like signing is available. “We are not looking for a replacement for Riyadh in terms of skill because every player is different,” he added.

“We will see what happens with loan players (who leave), and which players stay here. A few things are going to happen. The market is open until the end of August.

It’s not easy to replace a player like that. He doesn’t feel the pressure, he’s a man who has to play every day to be happy. I completely understand.

“I know how hard it was not to play in the FA Cup and Champions League finals. It was really good to work with him. Our relationship had ups and downs, but always with incredible respect.’
