  • Aashifa, 18, from Barabanki, Utter Pradesh, was killed by her brother Riyaz, 22

A brother beheaded his teenage sister for trying to get married against the wishes of the family in India before carrying her severed head in a bag to a police station.

Aashifa, an 18-year-old woman living in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, had eloped with her partner Chand Babu. They both came from the same village Mithwara.

However, her 22-year-old brother Riyaz resented the match and killed her in a gruesome “honor killing,” before carrying her severed head in a bag.

In chilling footage, Riyaz can be seen walking towards the Fatehpur police station while carrying Aashifa’s head. The public saw him with the blood-soaked bag and reported him to the police.

The young woman had wanted to marry a man of her choice, but her father Abdul Rashid and brother Riyaz were against it.

The economic times says the brutal murder has sparked outrage across the country and sparked anger at the lengths men will go to to “exercise control” over the women in their families.

On May 29, Abdul filed a police complaint against Chand Babu on charges of kidnapping a woman to get married.

Aashifa’s partner was then arrested and sent to jail and she was ‘sent back’ to the house where her brother and father lived.

When, on July 20, Aashifa made it clear to her family that she would like to marry Chand Babu, Riyaz became violent.

Ashutosh Mishra, deputy superintendent of police of Barabanki, said: “In a fit of rage, Riyaz took out a sharp weapon and beheaded his sister before putting her head in a bag and going to the police station.”

After being seen with Aashifa’s remains and what appears to be a weapon, Riyaz was reported to the police. Officers then intercepted and arrested him. He was sent to prison.

Local media say an autopsy was performed after Aashifa’s murder and evidence was collected at the scene.

A journalist from India’s Swarajya newspaper described the killing as “another horrific honor killing” and tweeted the video with the caption: “What this man is carrying in his hand is not a sack but a severed head of his sister.

“Riyaz was mad at her for eloping with her boyfriend (same religion, same caste). So Riyaz beheaded her.’
