Feminist academic denounces Oppenheimer ‘for not a single woman speaking in the first 20 minutes’ of the film
A feminist academic has criticized the new Oppenheimer film after claiming that women speak only after 20 minutes.
The film, which explores the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s physicist who created the atomic bomb, was released this weekend to critical acclaim.
On Twitter, Dr. Tanya Roth criticized the film for the lack of female representation within the first twenty minutes.
On Friday, the women’s history expert said, “Fun fact: no women talk until 20 minutes in Oppenheimer and then there’s a sex scene in under a minute.”
She also followed this up with, “Just to add, no people of color appear for at least 30 minutes, and I believe there are 2 black men in the whole movie.”
The scientist tweeted about her annoyance on Friday, but later added that it was a beautiful movie to watch
The academic, pictured here, took to Twitter to share her thoughts, to which she was widely criticized

The film stars Cillian Murphy in the titular role. alongside an ensemble cast include Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh.
It is also the first time that director Christopher Nolan has ever included a sex scene in one of his films.
Nolan previously said he was “quite nervous and appropriately cautious” when filming the scenes involving Pugh and Murphy.
Due to her comments, Roth was heavily criticized for her comments on the social platform.
One person tweeted, “It must be exhausting to be so miserable.”
Another said, “I don’t care if there are any women in it.
“As long as it’s as historically accurate as possible given the medium and keeps me interesting/”entertaining”/interested.”
Another posted, “Anyone who says “fun fact” never actually says anything nice and is always annoying. It’s a historical movie.
“Should they have changed the history to make it more inclusive of your feelings?” That’s the epitome of what’s wrong right now. Do you know what that word means?’
She later tweeted, “It’s beautiful to watch I admit. But I think the narrative structure is too complex.
“There are also at least 2 scenes where you see Florence Pugh topless, one of which is a sex scene.”
Emily Blunt, who plays Kitty Oppenheimer, also stars in the film as the title character’s husband
Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer in the recently released movie that has received rave reviews
told Nolan Insiderthat the intimate scenes played an “essential role” in establishing the relationship between Oppenheimer and Tatlock, whose affiliation with the American Communist Party led to suspicion that Oppenheimer was a Soviet spy.
He said, “If you look at Oppenheimer’s life and look at his story, that aspect of his life, the aspect of his sexuality, his dealings with women, the charm he exuded, that’s an essential part of his story.”
By comparison, Roth also tweeted, “Fun fact: I clocked 7 min, 35 seconds before a man spoke in Barbie. No sex scenes.’
The two movies were both released this past weekend in what’s called Barbenheimer.
Thousands of moviegoers are flocking to the theaters to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer – which together could gross $200 million in opening weekend
