Nicho Hynes’ troubled mother, Julie, made headlines again this week after she was fined $200 for shoplifting at an IGA supermarket.

Julie, 51, pleaded guilty to stealing items including chocolate worth a total of $20 just two days after being released from prison for another crime.

The Dally M medalist and Cronulla Sharks gun has stoically stood by his mum through all her troubles, while his fellow NRL players have rallied around the playmaker throughout.

But who is Julie Hynes? What did she go to prison for? And how did her son help her when she had legal problems?

JULIE’S BACKGROUND

Hynes’ mother divorced his father when he was a toddler and was often in and out of prison early in life, which meant he lived with his father Mick Wilson and older brother Wade on the NSW Central Coast.

In 2022, the Sharks star revealed that he remembers seeing the police put his mother in the back of a squad car while he was in primary school, but on the other hand, she learned about the family’s Indigenous heritage while in prison and passed it on to her son.

“I heard from my grandfather, a proud Aboriginal man,” he explained.

“It was amazing… Mom came home and spoke openly about our Indigenous background for the first time.”

DRUG COSTS

On February 9 this year, Julie Hynes was found guilty of supplying drugs after a family friend died of an overdose at her home on the NSW Central Coast.

The 50-year-old pleaded not guilty to one count of knowingly participating in the supply of a banned drug.

Hynes and her boyfriend Michael William Selvage were present in her two-bedroom granny flat in Blackwall when 29-year-old Luke Murphy accidentally fatally overdosed on heroin.

Mr Murphy had reportedly used a hydraulic press in the bathroom to produce heroin, but Hynes and Selvage denied any knowledge of what he was doing at the time.

The Crown alleged that on May 25, 2021, Hynes and Selvage helped Mr Murphy pack heroin. Their fingerprints are said to have been found on the press along with Mr. Murphy’s.

HOW NICHO ABLE

Hynes greatly helped his mother by sheltering her when she narrowly avoided jail time for the drug offense.

Julie was given a two-year prison sentence to be served in the community – specifically with her football star son.

The Cronulla halfback told Judge David Wilson: ‘She will be with me forever now’, during his mother’s sentencing on May 8 this year.

Wilson noted that testimonies from Nicho and his brother Wade convinced him that their mother was unlikely to reoffend.

“The sons of Hynes have taken steps that will most likely remove their mother from the abusive environment that has been for most of her life,” he said.

Last month, Nicho bought a $2 million home in south Sydney with self-catering accommodation for his mother.
