A smart TV spot celebrating women’s football has been hailed by fans as ‘gorgeous’ ahead of the Women’s World Cup starting Thursday.

Created by French telecommunications company Orange, the ad kicks off with highlights of scintillating tricks and fantastic goals from the French men’s national team.

The likes of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud seem to show their skills in a tightly edited montage.

It is revealed midway through that the players in the footage are actually women’s players from the French team, with the Orange using computer-generated imagery (CGI) to superimpose the men’s likenesses.

The ad makes it clear that the women’s game showcases the brilliant skill and technique enjoyed by all football supporters, in an effort to generate interest in the tournament ahead of the first game Down Under on Thursday.

And fans quickly took to Twitter to hail the “magnificent” ad.

One of them said: ‘Women’s football is great. Anyone who says otherwise is just a hater. The lack of diving is a relief. The only problem is finding the time to look at it.’

A second added: ‘I love this ad. It really got me thinking about my own preconceptions about women in sports. Excellent!’

Another posted: ‘The best football commercial I’ve ever seen. Simply beautiful.’

While one continued, “This is so cool. You have to watch the whole video to understand.’

And a fifth joked: “I knew it was CGI as soon as Mbappé went to a teammate.”
