British backpacker stabbed at Noosa as teenager charged over Queensland attack

An early morning exchange at a bus stop on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has left a British backpacker hospitalized and a teenager facing court.

The 25-year-old tourist suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the back and wrist following the ‘unhelpful exchange’ in Noosa just before 4am on Sunday.

Police believe words were exchanged before a 15-year-old returned with a bottle and a knife.

“I understand that bystanders came to the aid of the 25-year-old British backpacker and detained the young man at the scene until police arrived,” Detective Inspector Jason Overland said.

“It’s very hard to… say this is the wrong thing to do, but I would urge caution in those situations, especially when guns are involved.”

The injured man is being treated at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and is expected to be released on Monday.

The boy is expected to appear in court on Monday on charges of wrongful injury.

Noosa resident Mandy Lopez described hearing the news as ‘scary’.

“This is a healthy space… It’s definitely a safe space,” she said.

“But hearing this news makes me feel quite upset.”

The injured man is being treated at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and is expected to be released from hospital on Monday and is expected to be released on Monday

Inspector Overland called the attack an ‘outlier event’.

“The Sunshine Coast is a very safe location… Events like this are rare,” he said.

“We are looking for anyone who has footage, or any evidence, that could help with the investigation,” he said.

“If you could step forward now and provide that information to the police, it would be greatly appreciated.”
