Titanic director James Cameron has been approached to help create a drama series about the Titan submarine disaster that killed five people, industry insiders have said.

A streaming network is said to have contacted the acclaimed filmmaker, who is also an avid submariner and himself dived 30 times to the wreck of the tragic cruise ship.

Hamish Harding, 58, Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son Sulaiman Dawood, 19, French Navy pilot Paul-Henry (PH) Nargeolet and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush were all killed in the tragedy last month.

The OceanGate submarine lost communication with its support ship on Sunday, June 18, and search and rescue teams searched the ocean for days before it was confirmed that the crew had been lost.

Now the tragedy that gripped the world could be made into a series, with The sun report that an insider has tipped Cameron as a major streaming giant’s “director of choice.”

Titanic director James Cameron is also an expert on deep-sea exploration

A source told the paper: ‘The Titan disaster is already seen as a major series for one of the world’s biggest streamers – and James is the top choice for director.

It’s a subject close to his heart.

“He told the story of the Titanic with such compassion that it felt like a natural step for him to take on this.

“Following in the footsteps of those aboard the Titan is a huge undertaking, but it would take a lot of time, money and resources.”

Cameron is well placed to take on the series as he won three Oscars for the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, including Best Picture, and is also an expert on deep-sea exploration.

It has also been reported that Hollywood stars are being written as potential leads in the project.

Matt Damon, who will play the lead role in the highly anticipated Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer, is said to be on the wish list of actors.

Kumail Nanjiani, star of the romcom The Big Sick, was also mentioned by The Sun.

Cameron, 68, previously used the now-decommissioned Mir submarines operated by the Russian Academy of Sciences to dive to the wreck.

He used the submarines to film the wreck of the Titanic while putting together the movie of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

His underwater journeys took place in the mid-1990s and early 2000s and went as deep as 12,000 feet.
