My husband had a vasectomy at age 34 so we can be selfish without kids
A young couple is childless, so they can be “selfish,” take naps and go on vacation whenever they want — and they’re so sure they don’t want kids that they use extreme contraception.
Indi, 25, and her husband Heraldo Uribe, 34, are intentionally childfree and consider themselves DINKS – which stands for “double income with no children.”
The couple, who live in Sydney, have been together for five years, enjoy sports, travel, impromptu dinners and naps together.
Indi and Heraldo say they’ve always known they never wanted kids because they’re “expensive.”
Also, they both want to be ‘selfish’ and ‘spontaneous’ in their lifestyle.
Indi and her husband Heraldo are so confident in their decision that he had a vasectomy two weeks after their wedding so she could come off her birth control pill.
The couple loves their lifestyle as it allows them to take a vacation whenever they want or plan a trip to see friends with no strings attached
Relatives of the couple are disappointed that they will not have children, but Heraldo and Indi say they would rather regret not having children than regret having them.
Heraldo, a car salesman, had a vasectomy in June 2023 because they don’t see children in their future – and was 100% supported by Indi.
Indi, a makeup artist and business coach said, ‘I am selfish and therefore choose not to have children.
“I’d rather be selfish without kids than have them and want to be selfish anyway. I want to take a nap whenever I want. I want to eat when I want.’
Indi adds, “I don’t think I could afford kids.
“My husband got the cut so we can live in our DINK era forever. DINK’s lifestyle is a bit selfish – in the best way.’
Heraldo said, “I can focus on what I want: my career, my dedication as a husband, and helping others.
“Thanks to the DINK lifestyle, I can almost get back to my childhood and enjoy a stress-free life.
‘Your life is yours. Everyone else has already lived their lives according to their design, so don’t let them dictate what you do with your opportunity. Life is a gift, so use it to write your own story.’
The couple met when Indi worked at a bank and Heraldo had taken a break from serving in the Chilean army in 2018 and moved to Australia in April 2018 as a cleaner – so he could learn English.
The couple spent their lunch break together communicating via Google Translate while Indi helped teach him.
Indi said, ‘He was in the army and came to Australia to learn English. In the end he never went back.
“We talked about kids in the first few months of dating — so we knew we were on the same wavelength.”
Heraldo proposed in November 2020 and the couple tied the knot in August 2022.
Heraldo, the eldest of four, grew up taking care of his younger siblings, which made him realize that having children was not what he wanted for himself.
He explained, “As an adult, I finally feel like I can now choose to be childless and say goodbye to the responsibilities that were placed on me as a child.
“It’s my chance to enjoy a carefree life.”
A typical day for the couple is sleeping in and then going to the gym together before going to work.
And instead of having to pick up a family from school or worry about extracurricular activities, the couple can enjoy an evening together with their dogs for a walk and dinner.
Heraldo often comes to work with Indi on weekends, before they come back for an afternoon nap.
They make sure to take a vacation at least once a year and love the freedom they have of taking a trip to see friends who go on other trips as they please.
Indi said, ‘It is the ability to be spontaneous. If we want a lie, we can. If we want to visit friends, we can.
‘I want peace and quiet and children are noisy. I don’t see how a child would fit into our lives.’
The couple has been together for five years and discussed having kids early on, so they were both on the same page from the start
Heraldo and Indi love nothing more than coming home from work, eating uninterrupted and walking their dogs
After they got married, the couple decided that Heraldo would have a vasectomy, as Indi wanted to go off the pill after struggling with birth control symptoms.
Indi said, “Two weeks after we got married, we started getting questions like ‘when are you going to have kids?’
“We said we wouldn’t and they thought we were joking or we’d change our mind.
“They now realize we mean business after Herlado had a vasectomy. Some people say they are disappointed with our decision.
“I made my choice not to have children. I’d rather regret not having children than regret having them.’
