A hapless food delivery boy has risked his life and angered drivers by cycling through a busy highway tunnel.

The cyclist was seen pedaling furiously in Sydney’s WestConnex tunnel on Saturday evening as an air screen warned motorists of an ‘incident’.

As the rider continued on his perilous route, he sat as far to the left as cars avoided the inside lane.

But his position on the road did not make up for the traffic disruption, as shocked drivers were forced to slow down to avoid him.

Cars adapted to a crawl speed of 40 km/h in what is usually an 80 km/h speed limit.

Images of the delivery driver were taken from a car and shared reddit.

Caught this [sight] heads east at about 8 p.m.,” the original poster wrote.

“Wide almost the entire tunnel behind it to 25 mph until traffic passes.”

Cycling in the WestConnex tunnel, which is 33 km long, is illegal and carries a $268 fine.

The reaction was mostly anger at the rider’s actions, but others sympathized with him.

“Look, this is really the sad thing about these delivery guys – they don’t really know anything about bikes and shouldn’t be doing this job at all,” said one person.

“A normal ordinary cyclist doesn’t just cycle into a goddamn tunnel.”

“I can’t even imagine what was going through their heads. Probably not much,’ said another.

Several speculated that such an incident occurs when a delivery driver relies on Google Maps but fails to adjust their direction settings for cycling instead of driving.

Others took the opportunity to comment on the road etiquette of all delivery drivers.

“If they’re not on the footpath, they’re in the tunnels.”

“Imagine the guy takes the wrong turn and now realizes the delivery will take him about 3 hours and he will get paid about $7 for it,” added another.

Some commentators claimed to have been there and driven past the rider.

“I think I saw the same guy because I was in the tunnel at the time too. [He’s] I like the fumes in there.’

In 2020, Andrew Head, CEO of WestConnex, said driving in the tunnel is illegal because “it’s very dangerous.”

“I hold my breath when I see these incidents, always hoping they won’t end in tragedy,” he said, referring to footage of another cyclist in the tunnel in 2020.
