Huge huntsman spider found in Australian backyard as resident is slammed for poking it
Mega-sized spider is found in Australian backyard by resident who receives backlash from police for attacking him with a BBQ lighter: ‘Leave it be’
- A huge fighter was filmed fighting off a resident who poked at it
- The householder apparently used what appeared to be a barbecue lighter in the impact
- But spider lovers called out man for the act of ‘cruelty’
A huge, feisty fighter has been discovered in an Australian backyard with a householder who was criticized for taking it on with a barbecue lighter.
Images of what appears to be a male spider sitting in the grass with its teeth wide open and sparring with the object were posted to social media on Monday.
The owner prodded and prodded at the huge spider before the arachnid responded by digging its fangs into what appears to be a gas lighter.
But the video — titled “Real Grumpy Girl I Found on My Property Today” — sparked debate about the resident’s intrusive interaction with the spider.
“I wonder if it has anything to do with a barbecue lighter being shoved in his face?” one sarcastic commentator observed as explaining the spider’s “crankiness.”

‘Leave it alone. Amazing creatures,’ said another.
“If you were actually cornered with only teeth to defend yourself… what would you do? Too bad it didn’t get you,’ complained a third.
“This is just outright cruelty for no reason. There’s no excuse to torment a scared creature out there that you can easily run away from,” another person wrote.
But others were enchanted by the little creature with attitude.
“That was definitely a male, big pedipalps…I think once they get to a certain age they feel their time is running out and lose all fear,” they said.
“I always love to be in awe and admiration of creatures whose attitude to something a thousand times their size is, ‘Do you want a piece of me?
‘This is pure gold! Thanks,” wrote another.
“I never cease to be in awe and admiration of creatures whose attitude to something a thousand times its size is, ‘Want a piece of me? Sure, mate, I’ll have you!” What a way of life. Legend.’
Others were confused about the object the resident used to tease the spider, leading them to believe it was much bigger.
‘Oh! I thought it was a vacuum cleaner hose. Will calm down now,” one wrote.
“I honestly thought it was the barrel of a shotgun,” admitted another.
