Tom Cruise explains why he never wears a helmet during his life-threatening Mission Impossible scenes – and how he pulled off the most dangerous stunt ever in cinema: ‘There really is a lot at stake’

Tom Cruise has revealed why he never wears a helmet when he performs life-threatening stunts on the set of the Mission Impossible franchise.

Appearing on Australia’s The Sunday Project this weekend, the actor gave a very simple explanation for the risky behavior.

“It just doesn’t look cool,” the 60-year-old said with a straight face to the laughter of the studio audience.

“I wear a helmet when I ride my motorcycle and when I work out, and I wear pads,” he explained.

‘But when you start filming, all the cushions go off. So I train with helmets on, but when I’m jumping and racing on fast bikes, it’s not cinematic.”

Tom further revealed how he pulled off cinema’s riskiest stunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which has been described as his “dangerous” yet.

In the film, the seventh installment in the franchise, Tom performs a high-flying stunt, launching himself off a mountainside onto a motorcycle and sliding to the ground, leaving the crew “terrified.”

Tom says he practiced skydiving on the spot and had a ramp built in England so he could do a few dry runs.

He admits he didn’t practice with a helicopter, which was a last-minute addition to the scene.

The official trailer for the upcoming Mission: Impossible episode was recently released.

The heartbreaking, fast-paced clip showed plenty of action sequences featuring the Hollywood actor, whose movie Top Gun: Maverick was a huge summer hit of 2022.

He shines next to Pom Klementieff, Hayley Atwell and fan favorite cast member Simon Pegg.

This is Tom’s seventh MI movie and will be released in Australian theaters on July 8.

Returning to the sequel, Tom’s usual sidekicks are veteran Hollywood names Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby.
