Year: 2005
Genre: Romantic drama

Director: Joe Wright
Form: Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Brenda Blethyn

Longtime Jane Austen fans can vehemently debate which film adaptation of Pride and prejudice is the best, or if anyone could live up to Colin Firth’s menacing look as Mr. Darcy in the 1995 miniseries adaptation. But people who never considered themselves Austen fans should just sit down and watch Joe Wright’s 2005 luminous adaptation, which bathes the entire story in incandescent light and makes the desire and rejection far more direct, modern, and relatable than some of the more sedate. make adjustments.

Keira Knightley stars as the bloated heroine Elizabeth Bennet, with Matthew Macfadyen as the rich, bloated cad who resents his attraction to her; Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, Rosamund Pike, Jena Malone, Carey Mulligan and Talulah Riley complete her troubled family. For everyone who loved Greta Gerwig’s Little womenwith its sunny cinematography and sprawling cast of very specific and distinctive young women, this is the movie to try next. — Tasha Robinson

Shoplifters

film about shoplifters hirokazu kore-eda

Image: Magnolia Images

Year: 2018
Genre: Drama
Duration: 2h 1m
Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda
Form: Lily Franky, Sakura Ando, Mayu Matsuoka

One of the standout films of the past five years, that of Hirokazu Kore-eda Shoplifters is a moving exploration of what makes a family, and how far we must go to survive. It follows a found family living in poverty doing odd jobs and shoplifting to make ends meet. The family meets a young girl and takes her in, growing their circle despite the difficulty that comes with having one more mouth to feed.

Beautifully shot on 35mm film, with deeply felt performances that immerse you completely in the story, Shoplifters is a masterpiece from one of our most thoughtful and empathetic filmmakers. While researching the film, Kore-eda visited an orphanage and was moved by a young girl reading the entire picture book. Swimmy out loud, despite the staff asking them to stop. “I couldn’t get her out of my head and wrote a scene that reflected that moment,” he said. “I made this movie for the little girl I had heard reading Swimmy.”

Shoplifters won the Palme d’Or in 2018 and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, ultimately losing (and, in my opinion, unfairly) to Alfonso Cuarón’s Rome. And now it’s easier for you to check it yourself. —Piet Volk

Under Silver Lake

Andrew Garfield as amateur apopheniac sleuth Sam in Under The Silver Lake

Image: A24

Year: 2018
Genre: Neo-noir black comedy
Duration: 2h 19m
Director: David Robert Mitchell
Form: Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough and Topher Grace

David Robert Mitchell’s paranoid sequel to his breakthrough supernatural horror thriller It follows is a hard movie to wrap your head around and even harder to explain, which is what makes it such an intriguing (if polarizing) watch. Under Silver Lake follows Sam (Andrew Garfield), an unemployed layabout living in Los Angeles who briefly crosses paths with Sarah (Riley Keough), a beautiful young woman who lives in his apartment complex. When Sarah and her roommates inexplicably disappear, Sam descends a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and red herrings mistaken for clandestine leads to find her.

A riff on a Raymond Chandler mystery through a millennial version Inherent vice, Under Silver Lake is about a disgruntled young man looking for meaning and purpose in all the wrong places, only to find himself accidentally stumbled into a world stranger and treacherous than he could have ever imagined. It’s a puzzle film that satires puzzle films, a critique of toxic masculinity and the objectification of women that stumbles as often as its target hits squarely on the head. Under Silver Lake is a fascinating mess of a film that ensures you come away with something new every time, and that alone makes it worth watching. -AT

No country for old men

Javier Bardem in No country in old men.

Image: Buena Vista Home Entertainment

Year: 2007
Genre: Neo-western crime thriller
Duration: 2 hours 2 minutes
Drivers: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Form: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin

Cormac McCarthy, the acclaimed author of American classics like Blood meridian And The route, died in June at the age of 89. Known for his bleak and morally ambiguous stories and characters portrayed through his idiosyncratic prose, McCarthy’s novels have inspired several highly acclaimed adaptations, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the Coen brothers’ 2007 Oscar-winning neo-western starring Josh Brolin and Javier. Bardem.

No country for old men follows the story of Llewelyn Moss (Brolin), a blue-collar welder and Vietnam War veteran who stumbles upon the scene of a drug deal gone wrong while hunting in the Texas deserts. Llewelyn retrieves a $2 million bag from the carnage and believes he’ll be set for life – that is, until Anton Chigurh (Bardem), a sociopathic assassin hired to retrieve the money, comes looking for him.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s adaptation is a lean, vile crime thriller full of pregnant breaks and steely cans that spectacularly explode in sporadic bursts of gunfire. Bardem’s breakout role as Chigurh is known as one of the most iconic of his entire career, and Tommy Lee Jones’ brief but poignant performance as a sheriff investigating the carnage Chigurh left behind serves as a fitting bookend to a film that explores a world where moral clarity has almost evaporated. -AT
