Coco Gauff has reached the last 16 of the US Open women’s singles as the American star kept her fine form with a straight-sets win over compatriot Madison Keys.

The No. 12 seed put the disappointment of crashing out of the doubles competition to one side on Friday afternoon to win 6-2, 6-3 in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

Gauff has failed to drop a set in the singles tournament so far with the 18-year-old hitting form at just the right time.

‘It means a lot to me. I thought am I cursed, missed my alarm so was late. Kudos to my team as I wasn’t in the best spirits this morning.’ Gauff said on court post-match.

‘I was really going for my shots. I’m gonna go down swinging.

‘You’ve just got to fight for every point. She returned well and I was just trying to hang in there but I think I won maybe seven games in a row.

Thank you guys for cheering for me. I wasn’t sure how the crowd was gonna go, we all love Madison, I’m good friends with her off the court.

‘It’s been amazing, I ordered room service just so I can watch it by myself. I know she’s on my side of the draw but I don’t know when but that’s the goal. It’s a lifelong dream of mine.

‘It’s just crazy being on this court. Five years ago I had courtside seats and now I’m on the court.’
