The AFL has been forced to apologize after Marvel Stadium staff were advised they were involved in a terrorism exercise.

In an embarrassing sequence of events before the match, frightened workers were caught off guard when they heard machine gun fire for St Kilda vs Brisbane at Melbourne stadium.

The AFL has admitted there was a major communication breakdown after they failed to warn stadium staff about the terrorist training exercise, which took place last Friday.

Employees are now being supervised, that was the trauma of the event.

According to 7NEWS, staff had “no idea” what was going on and were “terrified” when they saw heavily armed police enter the stadium.

Similar exercises have been held at the MCG by the police in the past.

“The AFL has apologized and offered advice to affected matchday staff,” said 7NEWS reporter Tom Browne.

AFL director Travis Auld said: ‘We had a number of people in the stadium who were at work that day and witnessed the training exercise.

“We’ve spoken to them ever since, we’ve since offered our support and apologized for that.”

The AFL took control of Marvel Stadium in 2016 in a deal worth approximately $200 million.
