We were hit with £310 bill by rip-off Mykonos restaurant

An irate customer has left their Mykonos holiday in a rage after claiming they had been ‘cheated’ and had to spend £310 on a light lunch.

The holidaymaker was presented with a bill of €360.80 and said they were shocked by the restaurant’s prices as they tried to enjoy the sun on their Greek family holiday.

The tourist described the incident on Reddit and shared how they were scammed in Platis Gialos, Mykonos.

The customer explained that their family was looking for a good place to sit and enjoy the sun when a waiter at Eclipse beach restaurant told them they could “use their cabanas or lounge chairs if we bought two drinks.”

Believing it was a good deal at first, the customer soon realized they wanted a ride while the waiter didn’t stop pestering them to order.

The customer said they had asked for the prices and a menu but the waiter had cleverly avoided their questions by saying it was ‘cheap’.

The two parents each ordered a beer and a mojito, but while they were supposedly scammed out of their money, they were also “forced” to order milkshakes for their children.

As we sat there for about an hour we thought we might as well order some food. He recommended some calamari and the menu said €19,’ said the customer. They were also told that it came with a salad and bread.

Much to the shock of the customer, they said they were then billed for their four drinks at €78 (£67) and the calamari at €75 (£65). Being harassed for payment, they eventually gave the waiter their card.

But to even more dismay, the customer said they were being charged even more.

‘When the bill came back I was shocked as the calamari was €148 (£127), the milkshakes we never wanted but had to order for our kids were €38 (£33) each and the salad and bread we got told they were free were €28 (£24) and €14.50 (£12) respectively,” they said.

After telling staff he was shocked and angry about the payment, they said the staff ‘started to group together and got angry’.

They said the cashier then tore off the top portion of the receipt containing the transaction details and the name and address of the restaurant.

The customer said a waiter at the beachfront Eclipse restaurant said they could “use their cabanas or lounge chairs if we bought two drinks”

“They didn’t bother to sign after the transaction and just debited a whopping €360.80 (£310) from my card,” she added.

“I felt so cheated and would never want anyone to feel that way,” they concluded when other Reddit users sided with the customer.

One of them said, ‘Man, I got mad when I read this. Unfortunately it’s quite common in places like that and you did well to ask for a menu, but you should (everyone should) be more insistent or you know, leave.’

Another wrote: “Add a comment on Google, they seem to hurt them quite a bit, including on their Facebook page if they have one.”

A third said, “Sorry you got scammed and thanks for sharing.” It’s always those ‘free beach beds if you use the lounge’ from what I’ve seen.’

Platis Gialos is already known for one ‘rip off’ that the British have been warned about because of their exorbitant prices.

DK Oyster in Mykonos is already facing a series of complaints from outraged tourists who say they have been overcharged for their meals and drinks.

Alex and Lindsay Breen, from Toronto, Canada, were said to be having the time of their lives while honeymooning in Mykonos, Greece, in May last year.

However, the couple, both 31, soon had a nightmare when DK Oyster charged them nearly £350 (€406) for a beer, a cocktail and a dozen oysters.

The Breens claimed that the restaurant staff failed to give them a drink menu with prices before shocking them with the astronomical amount.

They also accused the restaurant of taking them to a back room to pay, rather than presenting the bill at the table. And when they questioned the staff about a glitch, they were shown a computer screen that was all in Greek. The owners of DK Oyster have since dismissed their complaint as a lie.

Earlier this year, an American couple was slapped with a dazzling £692 note for two mojitos, four crab legs and a salad – which the owners of DK Oyster have since defended.

Jessica Yarnall, 31, and Adam Hagaun, 30, from Montana, say they thought the cocktails were $27 (£21) each when they ordered from the oyster bar near Platys Gialos beach.

When challenging the bill, they claimed staff produced a ‘shot glass’ drink which they said was a sample of the $26.80 (£21) mojito and told their mojitos were several, at $107 (£84) per drink.

On the menu it looked like $40 for a crab leg but in reality it was $40 (£31) for an ounce of crab leg with a minimum amount to place an order.
