GlaxoSmithKline has filed a lawsuit with a plaintiff alleging that its blockbuster heartburn medication Zantac caused his cancer.

GSK and James Goetz reached a confidential settlement, the pharmaceutical company announced yesterday.

The decision also comes as a relief to boss Emma Walmsley, who has been under pressure since consumer health care group Haleon was spun off from GSK last year.

GSK does not accept any liability. The company said last year the allegations were “baseless” and 11 studies show the drug poses no risk of cancer.

Goetz sued GSK after it was found in 2019 that the drug contained a probable carcinogen called NDMA.

US watchdogs forced Zantac and its generic versions off the market in 2020 after finding that NDMA had not been introduced into the drug, but had been formed in the medication itself.
