A British tourist has drowned in the presence of his partner during a beach trip in Mallorca.

Lifeguards pulled the 62-year-old man out of the water and rescuers spent nearly an hour trying to resuscitate him on the sands of the popular holiday resort of Puerto Pollensa.

Their efforts to save him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The alarm went off around 3:30 p.m. local time on Thursday.

Well-placed sources said his partner alerted lifeguards.

One of them said, ‘She saw him floating in the water after he went for a swim. Lifeguards pulled him out of the water and tried to resuscitate him before emergency services took over when they arrived.”

The dead man has not been named.

A routine investigation into the tragedy has been launched, coordinated by a local investigating judge.

In April, a British man drowned in the presence of his teenage son in Tenerife.

The unnamed 58-year-old was pulled from the sea by two people, including a nurse who resuscitated him after he went into cardiac arrest while they waited for emergency services to arrive.

Emergency services continued to try to resuscitate him after arriving at the scene near the Punta de Teno lighthouse on the northwestern tip of Tenerife, but they were unable to do anything to save him.

In May, a British toddler drowned in a swimming pool at a villa in La Nuria near Benidorm.

Sources said the 19-month-old’s mother was at the property with three siblings of the youngster at the time.

Known as Port de Pollenca in the local Majorcan language, Puerto Pollensa is one of the favorite destinations on the island for British holidaymakers and many have second homes in the area.

It is known as a family-friendly resort. Visitors over the years have included former Prime Minister David Cameron and his family and former professional road and track cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins.
