A police officer who brutally punched a driver through a window at the scene of an accident reportedly responded to a bottle of wine thrown at him by the driver.

The shocking incident occurred at around 1.45pm on Thursday along Gympie Rd, Strathpine in northern Brisbane.

“Police will allege the man drank from a wine bottle and was under the influence of the substance,” a statement from Queensland Police said.

The emergency services rushed to the scene, where two other cars were hit.

The man was “highly agitated” and after being told to stay in the car, he allegedly repeatedly tried to leave by kicking in the door at the responding officer who “used physical force to restrain the man.”

“The man continued to try to leave the car and after several verbal warnings, a taser was deployed by police,” the statement said.

Additional officers arrived on the scene and another officer was said to have been spat on by the man.

He was subsequently taken into custody and taken by ambulance to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment of minor cuts, where he remains.

“Higher police viewed body-worn footage of the incident.”

A video posted to social media from a distance shows a police officer arriving and talking to the driver for a short while before repeatedly punching him through an open window.

In the images, the motorist appears to be resisting the officer as he hangs out of the window.

Another video filmed shortly after shows the officer groping the man.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
