A strangely smooth-faced Zach Galifianakis raves about Beanie Babies in The Beanie Bubble
Hollywood loves an origin story, but now that we’ve seen Peter Parker lose Uncle Ben and Batman brood over his dead parents over and over again, it’s time for a new hero: capitalism. This was the year of the product origin story films, of Sky Unpleasant Flaming hot Unpleasant blackberry.
Next up are Beanie Babies, the cuddly sensation of the 1990s – although as a totally unrecognizable Zach Galifianakis playing creator Ty Warner points out in the trailer, they’re actually crowded so that they can be better posed. The trailer has bombastic business pitches, pay gaps, flings… but if there’s one thing missing, it’s the Beanie Babies themselves. Give me the beans!
The hat bubble is co-led by Futurama writer (and Al Gore’s daughter) Kristin Gore and her husband OK Go frontman Damian Kulash, with a screenplay by Gore. Sarah Pike (Succession) plays Ty’s wife, with Elizabeth Banks (The hunger Games), Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers) and Kurt Yaeger (Sons of lawlessness) round out the cast. The hat bubble releases July 28 on Apple TV Plus.
