Father is gunned down in terrifying home invasion while his wife and daughters were in the house – with two masked gunmen at large after dramatic police chase and FOUR carjackings

A father was shot while trying to prevent two masked intruders from breaking into his home in the middle of the night while his wife and daughters huddled in another room.

Police said two armed offenders attempted to break into the house in Donvale in eastern Melbourne around 1:40am on Thursday.

The 46-year-old man was shot during the incident, while his wife and 16-year-old daughter were unharmed.

He was taken to hospital in stable condition with serious injuries.

A bullet also pierced the house’s entry closet.

Neighbor Ralph Learmont said he heard a “very loud” bang.

“It was a very loud, piercing bang,” he said 9News.

Mr Learmont said he heard another ‘pop’ about 15-20 seconds later.

It comes as police have launched a desperate manhunt following a series of carjackings in south-east Melbourne.

They are chasing two men after there were four carjacking incidents in the city.

It is unknown if the two men are the same armed intruders who attempted to break into Donvale’s premises.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said: ‘Police saw a Honda driving erratically on Princes Highway in Springvale before the vehicle took off at high speed.

“The vehicle was tracked through the southeastern suburbs by the Airwing before the occupants dumped the Honda and carjacked three people.”

The stolen cars collided with multiple other vehicles, including police cars.

No one was seriously injured in the carjackings and collisions.

“The men stole a fourth vehicle near Hoddle Street in Richmond and traveled to the city,” the spokesman added.

“The vehicle and its two occupants have yet to be located at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.

“The vehicle is described as a silver 2009 Ford Falcon station wagon registration XBX545.”
