Aussie sports icon Merv Hughes has unloaded a cricket fan who accused the former fast bowler of verbally abusing his brother in the toilets in Edgbaston during the thrilling close of the first Ashes Test on Tuesday.
The fan looped Hughes on Twitter as he posted the message: ‘@MervHughes332 for whatever reason you told my brother to shut up in the Edgbaston toilet today when he just asked you how the game was going. D**khead’.
Hughes wasted little time posting his reply: “You were there, you…. Heard the full conversation – you’re just as big a d**k as your brother!”
The former pacesetter is in England hosting an Ashes fan tour and was glued to the action as Australian Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon fought their way to one of the big wins in Ashes history.
Hughes was his typical feisty self, as he didn’t pull a fist when he responded to a fan saying he unleashed a foul-mouthed outburst in Edgbaston’s toilets

Twitter users got stuck on Hughes’ accusation in their replies to the first post.
“I suspect if that happened, it was more than likely that your brother posed as Ollie Robinson and he just got what he deserved,” one wrote, referring to England bowler Robinson after being criticized for a foul-mouthed diatribe. with Usman Khawaja in Australia.
Cricket legend taunted in toilets by no one. Yes, how will that end fairly?’ wrote another fan.
“Poms are cut out on and off the field as usual and forever live in our shadow,” said a third commenter.
Twitter users, on the other hand, had a field day with Hughes’ response as they supported him to the hilt.
Hughes (pictured bowling for Australia) was known as a larch firebrand throughout his long and successful playing career…
… and he showed that he has none of that with his staunch answer to his accuser
“Long-term Merv sends all three stumps into a cartwheel,” one wrote.
Solid Merv. Well played,” another added, while a third commented, “I sure didn’t pass that one on to keeper Merv.”
Since retiring, Hughes has kept busy as a radio and TV personality with his own fishing show on Channel Seven.
He – and every other Australian fan in Edgbaston – rejoiced in the harrowing chase as the Aussies chased the England target of 281 with only two wickets to spare.
Hughes previously surprised fans of the baggy green when he supported England’s Ollie Robinson after appearing to tell Khawaja ‘f**k off, you f**king p***k’ after taking his wicket in the first innings.
“Is it really getting to a point where a bowler can’t celebrate a wicket?” he told Code sports.
“Must be a slow news day if you’re trying to make it!”
