Emiliano Martinez has claimed Man United star Alejandro Garnacho is a ‘little treasure’ after the teenager made his Argentina debut in their friendly victory over Australia.

Garnacho came on as a second-half substitute as the world champions won 2-0 in Beijing on Thursday, with Lionel Messi and Germany’s Pezzella on target.

The 18-year-old had initially hoped to make his Argentina bow in March, but was forced to pull out of the squad following an ankle injury.

Garnacho also missed playing for Argentina in an Under-20 World Cup at home after Man United rejected a request to release him for the tournament.

While Garnacho played just 16 minutes against Australia, the winger has already impressed his international teammates.

Martinez praised Garnacho’s ability with the Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper and expressed hope that he can eventually succeed veteran Angel Di Maria as an important part of the team.

‘He’s a very humble man. He came to work; he didn’t talk much,” Martinez said TyC Sports.

“He really wants to play.

“The truth is that he is a little darling and I hope we can shape him to give us as much as Angel Di Maria.”

Garnacho has committed to represent Argentina over Spain, with the winger being born in Madrid and making three appearances for the European under-18s in 2021.

The winger chose to pledge his international future to Argentina, where his mother’s side of the family hails from.

“And if this is just a dream, don’t ever wake me up. Beautiful,” Garnacho wrote on Instagram after his debut in Argentina.

Garnacho hopes to return to action for Argentina on Monday when they play Indonesia again in a friendly.

Another appearance would mean a stunning breakaway season for the teenager, who has made 34 appearances for Man United in all competitions this season.

Garnacho was rewarded for his excellent performances in April with a new five-year contract.
