K-pop star Jennie Kim ‘cancelled’ in Korea over raunchy role in The Idol
HBO’s The Idol is currently causing controversy for its graphic sex scenes and explicit dialogue.
The series, co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and pop star The Weeknd (born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye), has shocked viewers and been called “misogynistic” by some mainstream TV critics.
Korean pop star Jennie Kim, best known as a member of chart-topping K-pop group BLACKPINK, is taking a beating.
Despite playing a small supporting role as backup dancer Dyanne, the 27-year-old was criticized in her conservative home country of South Korea, where it’s still unheard of for a mainstream pop idol to appear in a sexual acting role.
Outraged Korean viewers have likened the HBO series to “pornography” and scared the hell out of Jennie for signing on to the project in the first place.

Others have said The Idol tarnished her stylish image, which she built by becoming the global face of prestigious brands like Chanel.
A Korean article, translated into English by Daily Naverwrote, “Jennie, who usually had an elegant image, disappeared without a trace, even though she also served as a luxury brand ambassador.”
Korean fans were equally shocked, with one writing, “In the blink of an eye, she has ripped apart everything Blackpink has built with her own hands.”
Another commented, “Even watching that scene again, I still can’t believe she chose to do that dance with those gestures and facial expressions as well.”
“This is the first time I have seen an idol perform in such a dirty drama with that level of acting, which is why it is shocking and embarrassing. She will never be able to recover from this, her image is now in the gutter,’ another raged.

The pop star is also facing backlash from K-pop fans everywhere after she walked off stage in the middle of Blackpink’s concert in Melbourne.
The girl group performed a sold-out concert at the Rod Laver Arena as part of their Born Pink World Tour when the 27-year-old walked offstage in the middle of the group’s hit single, Lovesick Girls.
“Looks like we’ll be playing without Jennie for the rest of the show,” her bandmate Roseanne Park, better known as Rosé, told the audience.
However, we will do our best to fill the stage for you and give you the best night. In the meantime, our hearts will be with Jennie and support her.”
Rosé had previously told fans that Jennie skipped the band’s sound check that afternoon because she was “not feeling very well today.”
The group’s management team, YG entertainment, told news.com.au that Jennie was ‘unable to complete the stage due to her deteriorating condition’ and is now recovering.’

Despite the backlash, many of the star’s loyal fans also began rallying around her.
